Vowels: Vowel Throwdown! is a Short and Long Vowel Matching Activity for Grade One. There are 144 words to sort in the following categories:

Short a words / Long a words

Short e words / Long e words

Short i words / Long i words

Short o words / Long o words

Long u words / Long u words

The long sounds are influenced by the magic ‘e’ at the end of these words. Students will enjoy reading the brightly illustrated cards. They will sort the cards according to the vowel sounds read and place them on the appropriate mats. As an advanced activity students can choose to find short and long vowel pairs, e.g. short ‘a’ as in ‘at’ and long ‘a’ as in ‘ate’.
