This three-page worksheet helps students to understand and analyse Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem We Real Cool.

The first page deals with understanding the poem and its content, while the second page deals with the use of language features such as enjambment, alliteration and rhyme to characterise the young men of the poem. The final page includes both a scaffolded paragraph response (with an introduction and sample analysis sentence already completed and sentence starters for the rest) and a poetry writing exercise based on the structure of the original poem. The entire worksheet is editable to suit your own context.
