This talk, given in September 2016, is about why developing young citizens' values literacy matters so much during their school days. The extent of the corruption and dishonesty by those who should be role models illustrates the pressing need for children and young people to experience high quality SMSC and PSHE education, integrating their spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional and social learning.
The impacts from good, systematic character and values education are at least as important to young people’s happiness, wellbeing and life chances as they are to their academic and other achievements.
Since values relate to all aspects of life, values education is naturally cross-curricular. All teachers need to feel confident as facilitators, taking advantage of teachable moments, whatever the context. They need to empower learners, drawing out (including in their own subject lessons) how chosen values have shaped the past, are influencing the present and will determine the future we all desire.
