WHY WAS THE OLD GHAN RAILWAY LINE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA ABANDONED?

There are two Ghan Railway line in South Australia. One known as “The Old Ghan” (strictly part of the Great Northern Railway) - the other, the newer route known as “The Ghan Line” or sometimes called “The New Ghan”.
The New Ghan runs between Adelaide and Darwin and is significantly a tourist train. This unit deals with the Old Ghan line which no longer operates. Well it’s difficult to run a train if the lines have been removed. Today you can join the many visitors and follow part of the “Old Ghan Heritage Trail”. You will be able to gather information from several of the information boards along the way. Go back to the age of steam. Recognise the challenges faced by a railway passing through a challenging environment. Join the stockman at Parachilna as he waits for supplies from the train. Many who follow the Old Ghan Heritage Trail and read the information develop respect and admiration for those who worked on the Old Ghan line.
