Summary of passage
Wilma Rudolph, an Olympic champion, overcame challenges to achieve success in athletics. Born in Tennessee in 1940, she was the twentieth child in a large family. Despite being affected by polio as a baby, Wilma was determined to prove doctors wrong and walk again. With the support of her family, she underwent physical therapy and received a special brace for her leg. At six years old, she took her first steps. As she grew older, Wilma discovered a talent for running and joined her school’s track team. She trained diligently to become the best. At sixteen, she qualified for the Olympic Games in Melbourne but did not win a medal. However, in 1960, in Rome, she won three gold medals, becoming the first American woman to achieve this in track and field at a single Olympic Games. Wilma’s achievements inspired many and showed the importance of hard work, determination, and support. She will always be remembered as a true champion.
