This PowerPoint takes students through a detailed historical and literary analysis of the poem. It is ideally suited to Year8/9 classes and is the first poem I always teach to new classes at the beginning of the year as it introduced them to the terms Structure: Stanza: Line Length: Narrative: Simile: Rhyme & Internal Rhyme and Tone. It is a long poem so each student or pair of students can take a stanza as their own for a whole class reading of the poem. Please note that there is one stanza missing from this presentation as it was first delivered in Saudi Arabia and the very Christian references in Stanza 14 may have been considered offensive.
