This is a unit made up of 12 lessons that focuses on writing for a cause. Students will develop their persuasive writing skills while also exploring a range of important global causes such as climate change, education and gender inequality as well as different belief systems. The unit includes detailed lesson slides and is fully resourced. There is a formative and summative assessment in which students are required to write a focused piece of persuasion in response to diifferent topics. Differentiated resources are also include and there are also weekly spellings included in the unit. **

This unit is suitable for year 9 or year 8 students in key stage 3.

This unit was delivered in an international school in Colombia so uses some ideas relating to Colombia but is easily adaptable.

  • Lesson 8 in the unit requires students to access a computer / laptop in small groups.
    • Lesson 9 is a feedback reflection. For students to do this, formative assessments need to be marked so this could be done later in the unit. It uses a strategy called Think Pink Go Green - students have a part of their response highlighted in pink and then given targets to improve. Provide a box (created in green highlighter) for students to write an improved version of the part highlighted in pink using the targets given.
