Please find attached a Smart Notebook document exploring Mastery addition in Y5 in a variety of different ways. I have included a lot of concrete and visual examples instead of just the column method. This SmartNote was created to allow the children to implement their knowledge of Place Value. Allowing them to understand the importance of each number and how it can be represented, as it is no longer just about knowing the answer.
We do not follow Singapore Maths at my school, however, I have used their book in this Notebook so you can see a variety of different ways it can be represented. (You do not need SMB to use this Notebook, all the resources are included for you to use.)
I have explored: LO: To add using the 'counting on' strategy with concrete materials and number lines up to 10,000. (Complex word problems which are broken down into visual and step by step form, applying the powers of 10. The key objective is that all children can find the missing numbers using visual apparatus.
LO: I can integrate the 'counting on' method along with the column addition method. (Integrating the visual and written form together. The children then must come up with their own questions for their answers/calculations, allowing for a deeper understanding, following on from the previous lesson.
LO: I can work out the missing numbers in an addition sum using subtraction. (Missing digits within each set of numbers.) I have broken this down into a step by step guided. This is something most children find tricky.
