A good Year 7 lesson for the first week of term to encourage independent reading.
You will need at least one copy of Michael Morpurgo’s essay We Are What We Read in which he reflects on his childhood experiences of reading. This is published in Singing for Mrs Pettigrew: A Storymaker’s Journey, Walker Books, 2007.
Read the essay with/ to the class without telling them the name of the writer. Discuss the four questions (teacher’s notes provided) and then ask class to guess the name of the writer using the clue in question 4. They may be surprised to learn that Morpurgo did not like books when he was their age.
In pairs, pupils discuss questions about their own reading experiences, then produce a piece of writing to describe their own Personal Reading History.
