Composite functions
Lesson presentations and activities
IGCSE has some functions work on it. This is mainly consolidation of what I have taught them so far but I am about to move onto composite functions hence the last few slides look a bit different to what they will need to get used to as I want them to figure out what's going on. When I teach with this I will show them the proper notation for composite functions on the board after they have answered the questions. If you have time, you may want to add in some animations to replace the f(g(x) with fg(x) etc.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I couldn't see the functions you were using. I got f(x)=x^2, g(x)=x+3, and h(x)=1-2x. Am I correct? Thanks!

Fun A level maths activity, Composite functions: Numerical Introduction. A Bingo game to get students used to substituting numbers into functions and then composite functions.

Practice questions, homeworks and assessments
A PowerPoint I made to take my Year 10s through the new GCSE topic on Functions. Starts with simple function notation and substitution, before moving on to composite functions - both numeric and algebraic - and finishing with inverse functions.
Also included are two codebreakers for the substitution elements that lead to a funny joke. I also created a Tarsia for the inverse functions element, but sadly can't upload that to TES. Instead, you can download it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_raar3XGLkMVVhRdFZvUDJQNk0/view?usp=sharing (ignore the weird preview it gives you - just download it and it's fine).Reviews

Fab!
New on the GCSE syllabus, Clive is struggling with function notation icluding inverse and composite functions. Can your students check, correct and explain what Clive has done wrong in the four questions? This should encourage discussion.

This presentation gives students the knowledge on Composition of functions.
I aim to introduce the concept and then give a few examples followed by questions with answers and, finally, a challenge question for the ambitious students.
Please feel free to review my resource.
Hope this helps,
A_Maths.

Great PowerPoint - thanks.
A brilliant Tarsia activity by Gill Hillitt on composite functions. These type of activities can be used to consolidate understanding of a given topic, and foster positive group work and co-operative learning. For more ideas on how to use these types of activities (including twists!) and to download the latest version of the wonderful free software to open this resource (and create your own), just click on the web-link. If you have any comments or feedback for Gill, please share them below.

Excellent Tarsia activity where students have to complete the domino chain by answering questions on composite functions. I'd suggest having it all printed out and laminated so it can be reused!

Brilliant resource for new AQA GCSE. Just needed four minor amends to avoid expanding the product of two linear expressions which my Y9 sets have not yet done. Ages and categories should be revised to include Y9 and up doing new GCSE.
Ideal for GCSE revision, this worksheet contains exam-type questions that gradually increase in difficulty. This sheet covers Composite Functions (aka ‘Function of a Function’.
These review sheets are great to use in class or as a homework. They are also excellent for one-to-one tuition and for interventions.
For similar-style revision sheets on other topics, click 👉 tes.com/../more...
Answers are included, as is a NEW STYLE of PowerPoint, which allows individual questions to be selected for enlarged display onto a screen. The answer can then be worked out ‘live’ by the teacher (or student) or a single click will reveal my solution. This not only helps in class, but it is also very useful for a student who is revising at home 😀.
