Introducing Pythagoras
Lesson presentations and activities
Powerpoint looking at introducing Pythagoras through an investigation where students need to be in pairs. Each pair has a number 1 and 2. Number 1 begins trying to draw the triangle accurately and measuring the third side, number 2 tries to create a calculation that works using the numbers. Number 1 can help when they finish their task. The pairs swap and keep doing this between slides. They then look for a link and try to use this on a few examples. This is then generalised to a generic triangle where the pupils come up with pythagoras theorem. This is then applied to the initial problem which sets the task going.
Pupils will need a calculator, ruler and jotter for this task.Reviews

This is an introduction, including proof, of Pythagoras. Including an worksheet/activity in which the students can discover the relationship, and then a fun activity that can prove the relationship for deeper understanding.

Practice questions, homeworks and assessments
I created this resource for my low ability year 10's (I have used other peoples slides and apologise for not crediting them). The activity book allows them to investigate pythagoras theorem for themselves and discover the link between a, b and c. Once started, pupils can move through the activities independently, although the powerpoint allows for more teacher-led episodes if needed

I used this for my low ability Year 9s. Great resource.
GCSE Lesson introducing Pythagoras - planned for Top Set Year 9. Start with Tarsia puzzle on squares/square roots. Then investigative worksheet (only item not included here as made offline) of triangles of different sizes - ask students to measure each triangle and complete a table with the headings 'a', &'a squared&';, 'b&', &';b squared', &'c&';, 'c squared&' - see if they can spot a relationship. Then examples and questions set in Powerpoint, followed by differentiated worksheet. Plenary: WILT activity.
