Secondary maths collection

Introducing and simplifying surds
Lesson presentations and activities
This is a rich Venn Diagram activity on Surds, including simplifying surds.
To access all the Venn Diagram activities in this collection, as well as teaching notes, please visit: http://www.mrbartonmaths.com/venn.htm
Here is why I love Venn Diagram activities so much:
1) Students can always make a start. If they can think of a number/expression/object or whatever it might be, it has to go in one of the regions on the diagram, so they are up and running
2) The more regions student find, the more challenging the task gets, which adds a nice element of differentiation
3) They are incredibly versatile, and can be used for almost all maths topics for all ages and abilities
4) They are easy to tweak by simply changing one of the circle labels if you find they are too difficult/easy
5) Students can create their own as an extension task
I hope you and your students enjoy them.

Excellent, I used this as a group activity with my year 10 class. Thank you!
This power point provides you with a guide as to how we know v2 is irrational. Works well for KS4 and KS5 students as I find that many of them are not content with just being told that surds are non-recurring, non-terminating. You will need to present this to students - they're unlikely to follow it by themselves.

Practice questions, homeworks and assessments
Two codebreakers on simplifying surds, including adding and subtracting on number 2. The usual lame jokes to discover both involving toast and both conceived on the drive home.

Could be more than one lesson's worth of material here. Not too much repetition though. Can be used in conjunction with one of many TARSIA activities to be found online.

This resource includes three differentiated worksheets;

Yellow-easierPupils complete the worksheet at their level, once complete pupils move around the room collecting words of the joke with each answer. (Laminate and slice the display cards and stick up around the room).
