AQA GCSE English Literature Shakespeare – Macbeth - Exam Revision – How to Answer Exam Questions on the Character of Macbeth This is a sample answer for the AQA Shakespeare section with several supporting worksheets. It is based on a sample exam question designed to reflect the layout and format of the new AQA GCSE Literature papers. The contents are: 1. The Exam Question – a sample exam question based on Macbeth’s character using an extract from Act 1 Scene 7. 2. Character of Macbeth Sample Answers – this 800-word sample answer to the question is presented in two formats for your convenience. The first is a one-page A4 handout of the essay itself. The second is a two-page A4 handout with wider margins and more generous spacing – this allows ample space for annotation and highlighting, allowing students to completely break down the elements of the essay. I would suggest copying this onto an A3 sheet – I’ve used it very effectively with pairs of students using different colour markers to highlight the various AOs, the subject terminology, precise quotes etc. 3. Character of Macbeth Act 1 Scene 7 Sample Planning Grid – this is a one-page A4 handout which shows the students how to use ‘rough notes’ to plan and structure their essay. 4. Macbeth Master Planning Grid Template – this is a one-page A4 handout featuring a blank Planning Grid which students can use to plan their own essays for any part of the GCSE English course. 5. AQA Shakespeare AOs – this is a one-page A4 handout which explains the AOs to students in a manner that is accessible and easy to understand. This resource consists of two A4 sheets, one focusing on verbs and the other on nouns. I have used an extract from Chapter One of 'Of Mice and Men' as the basis for two cloze exercises. This has worked very well in class for pair work and has helped to reinforce basic grammatical structures for weaker students.

It is NOT intended to teach students the novel – students should already be familiar with Lord of the Flies. It is designed for you to use later in the school year when the novel has been fully covered and the students need to learn how to use their knowledge to write the best possible exam answers. This resource is a 50-question ‘Macbeth’ quiz, divided into five rounds. The rounds are: Family Ties, Places, Animals, Scotland and ‘Who said it?’. The questions range from straightforward to difficult and will be ideal for helping students to revise characters, setting, imagery, context and memorable quotes. The resource consists of: 1.
