I currently teach IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Also A level Biology. The resources I produce for my lessons are carefully planned and I try to involve a lot of self-learning to allow students to develop these important skills needed for further education.

A lesson which explores the effect of exercise and heart rate on the body. Students learn how to calculate cardiac output.
The power point explores the role of the cardiovascular control centre. Students complete a diagram showing how both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems can increase/decrease the heart rate depending on blood pressure, need for oxygen and glucose.
There is a little practical activity when students observe the effect of adrenaline on heart rate and how quickly heart rate changes.
A series of 4 lessons covering the following points:
GPP = NPP + R
Calculating net primary productivity
Calculating the effficiency of biomass and energy transfers between trophic levels
Terminology
Biotic and abiotic factors
Concept of niche
Stages of succession
PPT include many tasks for students to promote independent thinking and learning plus exam style questions and answers.
A series of complete lessons covering the syllabus content for the IAL Biology topic 8B.
This includes the structure and function of the mammalian nervous system.
The structure of the spinal cord and brain.
The peripheral nervous system
How we investigate the structure and functions of the brain
The effect of drugs on synapses
Chemical control in plants
Phytochrome and seed germination/flowering
I have tried to include various methods for both independent and group learning. There are also short assessment questions to check understanding.
A series of activities for students to complete in class or at home in preparation for the unit 1 examination. It is most useful to use before they attempt exam past papers.
Resources include:
A learning grid with focused questions to ensure students cover main topics in unit 1 (18 pages).
This includes biological molecules; Heart and cardiac cycle; Blood transport system; CVD; Cell membranes; Movement across membranes; Gas exchange; Inheritance; DNA replication; Protein synthesis; Mutations
Also with questions focused towards core practicals.
Exam command words reminder
A series of activities for students to complete in class or at home in preparation for the unit 4 examination. It is most useful to use before they attempt exam past papers
Resources include:
A tick sheet for revision
A learning grid with focused questions to ensure students cover main topics in unit 4 (11 pages). This includes photosynthesis; global warming; evolution; GPP and NPP; microorganisms and how they reproduce; the immune response; immunity ; PCR; DNA profiling and forensics.
Vocabulary reinforcer
Exam command words reminder
I have produced a website for year 12 students to support their studies as they prepare for the unit 3 exam. The website will be supplied on a word document and can be shared with allof your students. Any updates to the course over time will be updated on the website.
The website includes video support for each experiment
Exam-style questions for each core practical
A summary of previous core practicals examined from 2019-2022
Edexcel Specification Point: 5.20; 5.21; 5.22 covered.
A complete lesson discussing the implications in a global change of climate.
There are opportunities for group/pair discussion plus exam style questions and answers to check understanding.
A level lesson which focuses on reasons for speciation to occur. The powerpoint is a complete lesson which contains individual student tasks to aid note taking and examination style questions.
6 exam questions which focuses on the CORMS mark scheme. I have included a scaffold for students to refer to as they answer the question so they become familiar with each of the points in CORMS.
Mark scheme included
A series of revision mats to compliment the IGCSE edexcel syllabus. Each revision mat consists of examination style questions to challenge knowledge and understanding.
For best results, I photocopy onto A3 paper.
Can be used to complete a topic or revision for test/exams.
My students often are overwhelmed with the thought of preparing for their mock and IGCSE exams.
I have reduced the specification to simple points to enable the students to produce notes on each section.
To start with, they read through the statements and traffic-light colour code each section to determine areas they really need to focus on.
I advise they work through each point, producing summarised notes to support their learning. I have included a QR code to scan which leads to a page describing each specification point. The majority are in note form but there a few videos for trickier topics.
Students can successfully build up a series of revision notes and feel confident with their understanding of the course.
Edexcel IAL specification - students learn how the data for a model is produced and then extrapolated. We then look at factors other than carbon dioxide which can influence the model. Limitations of models are discussed.
2 complete lessons covering the events which lead to the formation of a blood clot and how atherosclerosis occurs.
Edexcel IAL spec link - 1.10 and 1.11
There is an excel video included in the ppt.
There are many opportunities for assessment in the power points and an exam question for each lesson.
5 complete lessons with a variety of tasks which explores the structure of cells.
Lesson 1 - Observing cells explores different microscopes available to observe cells and discusses the terms resolution and magnification. It also focuses on staining of cells.
Lesson 2 - Eukaryotic cells - discover the organelles inside eukaryotic cells and their function within the cell
Lesson 3 - Protein transport and the role of RER and Golgi apparatus
Lesson 4 - Prokaryotic cells and the organelles present. Gram staining is also looked at.
Lesson 5 - organisation of cells, tissues and organs.
Lesson 6 - Core Practical 5 Using a graticule
The lessons have a range of activities including video resources. Would make a useful tool for home study.
The principles of a circulatory system.
Objective: Know why many animals have a heart and circulation which act as a mass transport system to overcome the limits of diffusion
A simple worksheet to generate a discussion amongst pairs/groups. Students use the analogy of a public transport system which makes it easier to understand an animal transport system.
A worksheet that allows students to become familiar with the appearance of organelles using an electron microscope. Students can label the organelles and calculate magnification using the given information.
