They enable structured discussion by pupils about advertising to make them wiser as consumers and aware that adverts are carefully constructed texts. It also informs them to produce their own persuasive texts. There is a KS3 and a KS2 learning mat .

This task delivers great writing results with KS1 and KS2 pupils, because there is a model text of a zoo brochure advert, written specifically to demonstrate simple genre features, worksheets to aid writing and simple teaching notes to make a zoo brochure. There's a brochure for pupils to fill in their own zoo advert with pictures of animals. Fun task for summer and pupils can produce good written work! Pupils write instructions for a favourite ice cream and an advert for an ice cream or ice cream shop. There is a wordbank to support pupils who need support, taken from collecting ideas of favourite flavours and toppings from pupils. There are also instructions establishing how to write instructions to make an ice cream sundae. Next, there is a PowerPoint about how to write an ice cream advert. There is a worksheet for children requiring additional support on naming and adding adjectives to ice creams. Children can produce their own advert (either for an ice cream cafe or an individual ice cream) and there are a choice of sheets with a pictures of ice cream provided, if you want to use that for pupils to present their work.

There are text extracts of BFG & Worst Witch that can be used for children to convert to plays. The BFG sheet is slightly easier than the Worst Witch, if you want to use the two tasks for differentiation. If you prefer, you can use either the BFG or Worst Witch answers sheet as an example starter activity to show how the texts have been changed, before getting pupils to complete the activity on the other text. There is also a sheet outlining the rules for play scripts.

This activity is inspired by Dru’s spy vehicle in Despicable Me 3. There is an example of an explanation text written about Dru’s vehicle to show to class and to discuss features of an explanatory text. Children draw and write an explanation of how their minion vehicle works supported by an ideas bank, scaffold frame and teaching notes. There is a list of ultimate spy vehicle features for discussion and teaching notes and scaffold frame to ensure you get good explanation text writing results. There are examples of a Year 4s work to give an idea of the end product. There is also an optional extension task included.

This fun PowerPoint teaches children about persuasive techniques, using images and animations to make the ideas memorable and easy to remember. It aids pupils’ persuasive writing, but also gives pupils a new set of glasses with which they can make them more aware of the techniques used in persuasive media. It covers the use of persuasive techniques like appealing adjectives, catchy slogans, second person, imperative verbs, positive connotations and blinding with science. It is an ideal preparation for writing adverts, or brochures. It teaches that persuasive texts are consciously put together and constructed to achieve a purpose.
