Lessons designed to teach year 7 the skills they will need to know for their GCSE. These lessons use two Test Packs created by AQA.

10 lessons based on the topic of theme parks. This results in a persuasive speech writing assessment based on the Alton Towers ‘Smiler’ incident. It covers persuasive features, bias, and description.

This is a 10 lesson scheme of work. It could potentially take longer or be easily extended. It focuses mainly on the features of Gothic writing, freak shows, and outsiders. I have also included some paper 2 language skills using real descriptions of people’s experiences of going to a freak show. You will need access to a copy of ‘The Greatest Showman’ film for lesson 7 and 8. You may need to think of some questions to ask for this lesson about the message and inferences of character. I have included links to go with the lessons from Youtube I will be using with this scheme too. There are also pictures of the cast of ‘The Greatest Showman’ with pictures of the real people they are meant to be representing.

17 lessons that covers the whole play of 'Frankenstein'. Looks at plot, characters, themes and context.

This covers analysing holiday and hotel adverts, brochures, reviews, travel writing and persuasive writing. It covers some of the new AQA Language exam skills so that year 8 can get used to some of the skills they will need to know in the years to come.

111 slide powerpoint which looks at dissecting a poem and analysing it, as well as some creative writing opportunities. Challenge and extension activities included. Skills linked to new AQA criteria. Poems covered can be seen on the first slide of the powerpoint. All fully decorated and ready to use. Task booklet accompanies this scheme.

A series of 17 lessons to develop students' descriptive writing skills in preparation for the new GCSE English Language descriptive writing task (targeted specifically at the new AQA GCSE - 8700 - Paper 1, Section B). It uses some of the poems from the Power and Conflict section of the AQA anthology as a stimulus, along with a little analytical exploration of them. This is the first unit we teach our Y10s but could be easily adapted to simply focus on descriptive writing, add to the poetry, etc. If you do cover this section of the anthology, it is ready to teach 'straight out the box', with all relevant resources. Plenty of examples of published writers to use as models.

Fully decorated with a range of activities leading up to creating a newspaper report. Just needs learning objectives and success criteria adding.

Covers the book and integrates reading skills with writing. A range of activities with challenge and extension tasks. Powerpoint lesson 7/8 also contains photos from inside Auschwitz from a visit I took to the camp which can bring the story to life for the students. Mine were really interested to see what it actually looked like.

A SoW that covers a range of war poetry. Aimed at KS3 to give them an idea of what to expect at GCSE level.

These lessons have been designed to be used in form to reinforce essential literacy skills. They include engaging videos, and challenge and extension activities. The tasks are self-explanatory and hopefully will work well for the whole of KS3 and KS4. These could also be used in English lessons.

This SoW is ready to go. Decorated and video clips included complete with challenge activities. This covers the play 'Romeo and Juliet'. The SoW is based on watching the Baz Luhrmann version of the play and then extracts of key scenes to analyse and base creative writing on. It focuses on conflict, male aggression, character development and how these things link to contextual information. There are a couple of writing tasks including describing the scene at the Capulet's masquerade, challenging Romeo to a duel as Tybalt, and a persuasive speech as to who is to blame for Mercutio's death.

This scheme of work is based on the Usborne Classic Retold version of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. Each lesson covers 1 chapter more or less and they aim to look at skills that students will need to be able to use in their new AQA GCSE exams. They think about structure, characterisation, description and PEE analysis as well as some contextual links.

14/15 lesson SoW. Covers different contextual influences e.g. Elizabethan times/Shakespeare/witches. Looks at 'All the World's a Stage', and also focuses on extracts from various Shakespeare plays but mainly 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'Macbeth'. Lesson 2 - Timings refer to the film 'Anonymous'. No paper SoW as activities are self-explanatory. Fully decorated, with success criteria, lesson objectives and challenge criteria.

15/16 lessons which focuses on the topic of love and relationships with an assessment, and then moves onto unseen poetry with another assessment. This could be easily expanded. It aims to mimic the skills used in the AQA Literature exam.

This scheme of work focuses on love and relationships in the play between Beatrice and Benedick, and Hero and Claudio. You would need a film version of Much Ado with Kenneth Brannagh to help with the teaching as it is a short scheme of work. My year 7s really enjoyed it.
