A useful lesson starter leading into the lesson - in the hour session planned for I used 6 minute intervals with an alarm to notify students when to stop and take a photo of the work in progress, but over longer sessions it works well too - 6 minutes per stage certainly keeps the lesson pacey, a longer session will give them more stages of development, which is great for AO2 and 3 as they can evidence review and refine and reflective thinking. Our students post on their Instagram as its quicker than having to go upload, print, cut out and stick in.

This always goes well - it gives students a systematic approach to making a seamless repeat pattern. The step by step guide on the power point comes with a starter pattern looking at repeating pattern across different cultures and then focuses on William Morris style repeating process, so a good coverage of AO1 2 and 4. Great for years 7 - 9 but can be done in a simpler version for KS2 also. Good to follow on from some observation drawing sessions on natural forms, but I've used the idea with allsorts of shapes from Cosmic to micro organisms

I use this as an introduction session to life drawing as it is a great confidence booster in figure drawing, but I've also found it really useful as part of any project to do with the figure. Using Rodin as a source it gives good crossover between AO1 and AO2, looking at the way he uses pose and body language to inform their drawings to get a really informed and meaningful personal response. The great thing about working from sculpture is that it frees the students up from worrying about the detail that often gets in the way. There is an extension activity using new approaches for them in media in a really expressive way. Great for GCSE and A Level students

This has always proved a really useful lesson, either done part way through a project or towards the end. It focuses the students into thinking what is their work about, what are they trying to do in their work, and how they can explain their ideas. I use this source by separating the images from the text, and the students have to match the statement to the work. This then leads into them highlighting areas that they find most informative and commenting on how they can understand the work more after reading what the artist has said about it. They then begin to formulate their own thoughts into writing their own artists statements to go at the start of the project, rather than an evaluation at the end. This is great for GCSE and A Level AO1 and 4, and also for creating a great impression with the moderator.

15 inspirational posters that will challenge thinking and can also be used as lesson starters or as something to refer to should discussion points arise. I find them useful in having them around to subliminally challenge students' thinking and to get ideas from. Contains cultural aspects, big questions and ones that can be adapted to fit thematic project work. I started using discussion questions to break away from the traditional biographical writing students tend to do, and its really helpful in generating evidence of thinking and an informed, personal response for AO4

An easy step by step guide to doing joiners with photomerge on photoshop. This is so easy for students to explore David Hockney's joiners in a really fun and active way - because they are reasonably quick to do its feasible for students to be able to explore a set of these in a lesson and generate a body of work quickly. Mixes AO 1 and 2 nicely if they start by researching what Hockney did here. Always a busy and engaging lesson

A lesson through power point for younger learners to begin to think about how they could write about painting. This is a useful starting point for looking at subject matter, approach and techniques as things to consider when gathering responses. The presentation has suggested tasks to complete through the lesson to break into chunks.

A set of 15 questions to use as display to prompt thinking, or to use as starters. These have been really useful in challenging perceptions - I originally did these for an Open Evening but they have been great to refer to in class as opportunity arises. Includes

The extended tasks allows for further personal responses to develop again promoting E&D in the students exploring and sharing what they find in term of a top 10 they create. Ideal for an intervention lesson at KS3, 4 and 5, or as a lesson to widen appreciation and knowledge of Art History

This is a fun set of lessons for up to Year 8, working really well with KS2, but I've also used this idea with KS4 and post 16. It allows students to find about artists using similar approaches and aerial photographs to explore making an abstract painting, so covers AO1 2 and 4 nicely. Because they are looking at aerial photographs the usual worries about abstract art don't surface, and they are making something personal to themselves in what they choose as their subject matter. A nice set of lessons which they all enjoy

A starter and lesson follow on looking at composition, the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Section. This can extend into a set of lessons investigating composition in students' work. Great for a mix of AO1, and AO4 and incorporates some maths into the mix too. Useful for a wide range of KS2 3 4 & 5 as well as being great for a part of project work to show a good understanding of composition.

This lesson has been really useful for students to consider how to show the processes of their work so that it is clear they have made decisions with their media in the development of their work. There is a starter activity which focusses them into the notion that an unfinished piece of work can be really useful in how we understand how an artist works, and how this is useful to them - show the journey of a piece of work and the moderators will understand how they think, use their media and refine their work. Really good for AO1 2 and 3, and useful for KS3 4 and 5.

A lesson to focus on best ways to develop responses for AO4. Ideal for KS3 GCSE and A Level in taking students from initial basic responses to how they can use sources and information to develop their thinking and extend their written responses. The power point contains reference to 2 artists, prompts for thinking, an extended task with suggestions to get going with ways of sentence starters, along with aims and objectives. I have always found this lesson really useful in developing the skills needed for AO1 in a way that is based on Blooms, but less overwhelming in terms of it being so much to look at for students.

A guided activity for art and photography - the power point has examples of artists exploring the subject of the bed as something of personal meaning. This has a set of tasks that builds into a mini set of work - photography, drawing and painting, contextual referencing

This scheme of work takes students through stages in making a successful composition Key areas covered are observation drawing skills, key terminology, rules of composition, critical referencing – contextual studies, development of ideas in range of media and approach and realisation of outcomes. I've used this with classes from year 8 to post 16, the idea of the secret formula for how to make a composition goes down really well and gives the students a tangible set of rues that they can continue to apply in painting in as they tackle other projects. The set of lessons can be delivered to fill a half term, and this version always worked best in the Autumn through using natural forms and colours in Autumn.

A useful intervention or cover lesson - comes with a starter task to engage on entry and leads through examples of how fashion designers are using artists as influences in their work. The task has suggested artists to explore and has learning objectives to focus the students on outcomes

2 fun activities to involve students which really engage students in a twist on Aboriginal Art approaches. This has been great with KS2 and 3 and they enjoy it because of the involvement with making the images from things personal to their journeys, routes to school or the footprint activity. A nice mix of activities to extend their responses and hits AO1 and 2 with creative responses and engagement. The resulting work can make a great class display so celebrates E &D really well.

This has always been a great lesson - students do not know that photography is a baby in terms of art forms at 200 years old and they are really interested in looking at the images to work out why these paintings are so different before and after the invention of photography. (before they know what the lesson is about). The power point contains 8 and 10 pre and after images to cut up for students to use in a sorting exercise and then suggest what has happened to affect painting like this. The file contains brief notes to explain the main differences, which the students can then expand on in their own responses. This is great contextual stuff for Photography students but also for any Art students if you want an interesting art history, contextual lesson hitting AO1 by giving them a real understanding and background knowledge behind Impressionism

This is a set of 40 close up photographs taken by myself of large scale Hockney Ipad drawings. These form what is a real master class in mark making when working with brushes on the Ipad, and it is easily transferrable to Photoshop. A really useful set of slides for students to focus on the mark making to explore landscape forms in new ways over a set of lessons to stretch their landscape responses. Its super for GCSE and A Level students generating responses to AO1 and 2 - showing a deeper understanding of how Hockney works as well as giving them new approaches in mark making in IT based work. The 40 images are part of a 24 page power point which also has some complete work for students to see the mark making in context.
