There are poems about colonisation, the stolen generations and land rights struggles. Some of the poems are by famous artists like Oodgeroo Noonuccal, others are from Inside Black Australia: An Anthology of Aboriginal Poetry (published 1988).

Two assessment tasks written for a Macbeth Unit and the unit plan showing the lesson outlines for an 8 week unit. This English unit has been developed for a year twelve class (in Australia) studying William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth. The focus for this eight week unit has been taken from the Queensland Studies Authorities suggested work program “The human condition – Shakespeare.” Within this unit, the student’s engagement with Macbeth will emphasise “the aspects of the human condition evident in the play through the representations of central characters and their relationships and motivations.” As part of this focus, “students will consider such aspects as the impact or role of power, fear and violence in the play and their relevance to contemporary times.” Included are two summative assessment pieces – a spoken ‘persuasive text’ (summation speech) and a written ‘reflective text’ (feature article) and marking rubrics.

Looking at marriage equality and what has been said about it on Q&A (with some clips to watch). Another Q&A clip about Independent Candidate Bob Katter (in an episode about mental health) where he gets challenged by Josh Thomas about his homophobia and his denial that there are any gay people in his electorate. This lesson also looks at immigration (particularly illegal immigrants) and looks at the language used to label them. It also looks at newspaper articles and political cartoons about a drowned three year old Syrian boy, Aylan Kurdi, whose lifeless body was washed ashore in Turkey. It includes scaffolding to write an analysis of some of these political cartoons. PLEASE NOTE: this resource was made in 2016 before marriage equality was achieved in Australia. The discussion of refugee issues is still pertinent but much has happened since then thus have marked down the price

A PowerPoint designed to last a few lessons. It explores two key themes in Macbeth: Power and Ambition. After defining these terms it looks at specific examples from the play. It includes prompting questions to get the students thinking. It also introduces a continuum of power and how this is illustrated within the play: The seduction of power - The lust for power - The obsession with power - The seizure of power - The abuse of power - The corruption by power - The insatiability of power - The destruction resulting from the obsession and abuse of power. It also includes key quotes from the play which demonstrate this. Finally, this PowerPoint includes exam advice including how to plan for the test and structure the essay.

This lesson defines politics, looks at what is needed to be classified as politically literate, lists various forms of political participation, explains how the party system works and defines opposition/minor/independent parties. It also looks at the Labor party key players, the ideals of the party, the main platforms for the election, the 100 positive policies (their advertisement and the chaser’s response), it then lists all 100 positive policies and looks at some of the most interesting ones (social issues including refugees etc.) PLEASE NOTE: The material in this lesson was created in 2016 so would be good at providing context for where we are now

A ppt which explores how the literary devices are used in texts that represent teenagers. Teen specific examples of parody including clips from 'Not Another Teen Movie.' Examples of sarcasm with clips from 'The Inbetweeners' tv show (no swearing). The impact of tone of voice. Introducing other techniques: exaggeration, burlesque, irony (with a clip from the Little Rascals and Shrek). Then it looks at clips of J'amie from Summer Heights High and an example monologue about this scene written by a past student.

This PowerPoint includes: a synopsis of film and information about the author of the novel: Dashiell Hammett. This ppt introduces the femme fatale and film noir and explores its defining features and how they influenced crime films. It also looks at societal influences on writers and filmmakers of the time. Within the lesson there are a few viewing activities including an excerpt from The Maltese Falcon and the trailer of Postman always rings twice (another well-known example). If I have time I usually show the trailer of Gone Baby Gone as a modern example. For homework, students consider how they could incorporate some of these elements into their own short story.

A PowerPoint which includes a list of questions for students to ask themselves every time they analyse a poem. The poems to be explored show people’s feelings and emotions about war and the toll it takes on human lives. While some poems talk about bravery, patriotism and pride, this collection challenges this perspective. Both poems contest the notion of war showing it as a senseless waste of young lives. Students read one poem and there are set of writing activities and questions for them to respond to. They then listen to the song 'And the band played Waltzing Matilda' as they read along on their sheet (also provided). Afterwards, there are 11 activities for the children to complete.
