A couple of lessons looking at finding fractions of integers (whole numbers) including both multiplication and division. Based a little around 10 ticks but some good activities for building progress and a range of worded problems to support literacy. A fun approach to collecting data using simple paper helicopters and cutting propellors to different lengths. Students are introduced to accurate measurement and there are options for pooling class results and investigating reliability. Then progress to graphing data using scatter graphs and possibly constructing a coversion graph relating the two variables. Ideal for the L5+ student and the disengaged mathematician or scientist! A fun starter to proportions using M&M sweets. Supply students with bags of 20 MéMs with 10 of one colour, 5 of another colour, 4 of another colour and 1 of a final colour. There is a worksheet to support this and a couple of activities with cubes and cards. Great fun so give it a go. Photos soon to follow and support these lessons. A first lesson for L4 pupils, possibly even L3+ students, beginning with key terms, comparison of photographs of graphs drawn by three pairs of pupils and then pupils drawing their own first quadrant. Pupils then identify coordinates from the first quadrant and points find points along lines in the first quadrant and an unknown shape. Resource finishes with a game for pupils and they may design their own version as well. Many opportunities for group approaches. This level 5+ resource can be delivered in maths or science and should take two to three hours to deliver. Ideally the speed section should be combined with some simple practical activity around falling objects (terminal speed) or cars down a slope. The worksheet is also useful for extension. This lesson follows on from the previous one (V) and gets students to put together formula for the perimeters and areas of squares, rectangles and triangles. These are set as a problem-based learning tasks for froup arrpoaches and there is then some extension tasks using the construction cubes. Lots of opportunities for discussions and exploring students thinking. Introduces the idea of proofs as well. Lesson works well for L5+ though could be higher depending on shapes used. Mathematics of Coordinates II - L4 Maps This is a cross-curricular lesson looking at finding and mapping 4-figure grid references. It is highly active and fun-based turning your classroom into a hunt for treasure. View the resource for full instructions. This is a set of lessons based around the 'Edexcel GCSE Mathematics A Linear Higher student book'. You do really need the book! This allows students to explore key words in each chapter - looking at challenge, definisitions and connections. Then students progress to the Big6 challenges which are 6 key areas/skills that must understand. Students should also explain their thinking behind solutions and answers. Every set of three lessons is followed by a mini-assessment.

This is the stem of one or two lessons for L4+students exploring 3D cubes and cuboids. There are opportunities for investigations and questions from these activities, and even a potential science link to surface area of biological structures. L5+ students could certainly build the cuboid skyscrapers and graph relationship between cubes used and total faces, or even use it for number patterns. The cubes also support cubed numbers or cubic volume work really well to visualise and work out the cubes of numbers 1 to 4.

A fantastic activity for maths or science focused around making simple paper helicopters and collecting data on how quickly they fall. This lesson was observed by OFSTED on the last lesson of a two day inspection with a lower-ability math group and achieved a 2 judgement. You can extend the activity to add stretch and challenge. The second lesson now looking at simplification of expressions using single, double and mixed expressions. Plenty of diffentiation for progression in pupil questions. Mathematics of Coordinates III - L4 Four Quadrants This lesson covers work in four quadrants and progresses onto equations of simple lines. There is also an online game which is a good pleanry or engager. At the end there is some access to higher work understanding the calculation of linear functions.
