GCSE Resistant Materials revision maps

These four pages of excellent revision materials have been produced with the help of an A* student and focused on key aspects of the GCSE Resistant Material specification. There are four pages in all and they really helped my students with their revision for the examinations. The resources were mainly for AQA specification but cover many features from other specifications.

Science of Solids, Liquids and Gases II - Felix

(1)
This lesson follows on from 'The Egg' for teaching solids, liquids and gases in a contextual way. The focus is Felix Baungatners(?) high altitude heroics (?) and the idea of his suit and capsule being a 'man-made&' egg. The lesson covers covers L3 to L6 and good progress is possible by looking back across both lessons and redrafting written explanations. Basic lesson attached as usual and please suggest improvements or additions. Follow me on twitter @boostprogress

Metacognition Questioning Tool

This superb resource is a combination of research published around Bloom's, SOLO Taxonomy and Metacognition. It was inspired by the Sutton Trust report into factors affecting student's learning and the awareness that metacognition and reflective learning was a key driver. Students and teachers can use the tool to look at all stages of students thinking, most advantageously when looking at the different stages in projects and during problem-solving tasks. This is the only successful metacognition resource available and it has been tried and tested. As always please leave feedback and make any suggestions for improvement. Maths of the 2010 World Cup

As a warm-up to this summer's festivities I have put together a simple lesson for students to analyse the scores from the 2010 world cup. The table in EXCEL could also be modified for a spreadsheet or formula activity. Ideal for practicing tally&'s and progressing to more detailed analysis of mean, mode and comparing performance against ranking. Lots of possibilities and I will probably add to this resource as the lessons develop. As always leave feedback and follow at #CE4ET and #boostprogress.

Mathematics of Coordinates I - L5 Four Quadrants

(0)
Sequences, functions and graphs lessons: for getting students to find corodinates in all four quadrants, find missing corodinates and to investigate lines parallel to the x-axis and y-axis. Nice game=based starter and plenary. This includes resources that can be printed out for group tasks and some opportunities for literacy. Skills for Science

This is one of our "Skills for Science" which supports 11-16 year olds with the development of softer skills of How Science Works. They are all focused around practical tasks and then focus on a area, such as planning experiments, experimental safety, data collection and mathematical analysis and evaluation. They are ideal for the new GCSE Science specifications in the UK and more general aspects of wider science education in the USA. All are high quality and well supported with images and relevant contexts.

Mathematics of Words I - Algebraic Expressions

This is a lesson ained at Level 4+ students where students use scrabble tiles (cards) to become familiar with numerical values of letters and begin to work with expressions. Blooms sets the cognitive demands of the scrabble activity. Highly kinesthetic and helps early understanding. Later slides also cover solving simple expressions (using cards) and there are some extension questions from CIMT at the end. A lesson plan will follow but please suggest some activities in the comments that have worked with this resource. Follow me on twitter @boostprogress

This resource is for setting the cognitive demand of common numeracy objectives. This can inform outstanding planning and setting appropriate differentiation within and across lessons. If you feel any verbs are misplaced then please feedback, although some may be used in differentiated contexts. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress

Mathematics of Word IV - Expanding Brackets L5+

A resource for L5+ or grade C pupils. Requires Maths Watch videos. There is a linked lesson at L4+ in my resources if this is too demanding. Once again the basis for a lesson and does not contain the lesson plan or rich questioning resources. It should also be followed with some worded problems and contextual examples which I may add soon? Please add any suggestions to comments for improvements. A couple of lessons introducing metric and imperial measures and their symbols. It then moves onto estimating and measuring lengths, before finishing with conversions between different measures of length (L5). Borrow fromthe scientists a set of 1m rulers to add a kinesthetic aspect to the measuring. You may even set a mini-competition for most accurate estimates. Separation Techniques - Aliens Blood

(0)
A series of 2 or 3 lessons that address separation techniques: filtration and paper chromatography. The filtration uses a mixture of sand, iron filings and water and for chromatography you need filter paper chromatography strip and a suitable colors of felt tip or highlighters. There are frames provided for students to record their learning on and a second copy for teachers to complete for peer-assessment. The lesson is ideal for learners between 8-14 years of age in science or classroom settings. Please also complete your own risk assessment, specifically around the solvent for chromatography: in my practical I used ethanol as it dissolves pigments in pens. Alternatively, you could try water for water-soluble pens and inks, if necessary. All images are obtained using creative commons licence or my own images.

AQA GCSE Chemistry C1 - Group 1 Elements

A nice PPT to use with KS3 or KS4 Foundation groups and based around demonstrating the reactions of Li, Na and K with water and oxygen. Also some good video and website links to explore. Look out for an error on reactions website word equation between Li and water...but it is corrected on my PPT. The lesson links to Group 0 up next. You do of course need your own risk assessment or could miss the practicals and use the videos (boo). Any suggestions for improvment are welcomed. You can follow me @boostprogress.
Graphology of Independent Variables

Graphology of Independent Variables

A great lesson for L4 - L7 or GCSE students in mathematics of science. The practical component can be done outside of a lab as well, as long as water is available. The focus is to explore types of independent variables and link them to appropriate graphing techniques. There are lots of opportunities to take the lesson in your own bespoke direction and I will shortly add a few more resources. If you are a mathematician then seek a scientist to get you started on this great cross-curricular opportunity! Of course any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
