A warm up activity with the winter olympics, practical components and even the opportunity to develop graphing skills or extend the investigation at the end. Students are also supported to identify and change types of independent variable. As always leave feedback and follow @boostprogress or @CE4ET.
Mathematics of Coordinates I - L4 First Quadrant

Mathematics of Coordinates I - L4 First Quadrant

(0)
A first lesson for L4 pupils, possibly even L3+ students, beginning with key terms, comparison of photographs of graphs drawn by three pairs of pupils and then pupils drawing their own first quadrant. Pupils then identify coordinates from the first quadrant and points find points along lines in the first quadrant and an unknown shape. Resource finishes with a game for pupils and they may design their own version as well. Many opportunities for group approaches. As always follow me on twitter @boostprogress and provide feedback comments.

GCSE Core Science - Food and Health - Burning Food This resource is one of four lessons and perfect for students of middle to lower abilities at targeting 'C' grades at the end of their course. The focus is on obtaining energy from food and these resources support the basic burning food to heat water practical. There is a good video link and then very strong components to analyse and graph the practical results, developing key How Science Works skills. There are also some differentiated activities and tasks, including a nice energy game. If you have ideas for improving this resource then please let me know.

Blooms Learning Task Hierarchy

Have you ever thought about the cognitive demand of learning tasks? I had a go at putting common tasks into Bloom's taxonomy. This is useful for differentiating tasks within a lesson and across lessons. Please as always let me have feedback on improving this resource.

A2 Biology - Inheritance - 1. Introduction This is the first lesson on the GCE A-level Biology series on 'Inheritance' and as the title suggested covers an introduction to the key terms. Tasks are differentiated at A, C and E standards. All the familiar examples are covered including Mendelian pea characteristics and coat colour. If there are suggestions or amendments to improve this resource then please let me know.

Mathematics of Words VI - Making algebraic Formula

This lesson follows on from the previous one (V) and gets students to put together formula for the perimeters and areas of squares, rectangles and triangles. These are set as a problem-based learning tasks for froup arrpoaches and there is then some extension tasks using the construction cubes. Lots of opportunities for discussions and exploring students thinking. Introduces the idea of proofs as well. Lesson works well for L5+ though could be higher depending on shapes used. There is also an assessment from Kangaroo maths attached. Follow me on twitter @boostprogress
Mathematics of Cubes and Cuboids
BoostProgressBoostProgress

Mathematics of Cubes and Cuboids

(0)
This is the stem of one or two lessons for L4+students exploring 3D cubes and cuboids. There are opportunities for investigations and questions from these activities, and even a potential science link to surface area of biological structures. L5+ students could certainly build the cuboid skyscrapers and graph relationship between cubes used and total faces, or even use it for number patterns. The cubes also support cubed numbers or cubic volume work really well to visualise and work out the cubes of numbers 1 to 4.

The second lesson now looking at simplification of expressions using single, double and mixed expressions. Plenty of diffentiation for progression in pupil questions. Appropriate for L4+ students and can be supported by scrabble-based card sort. Please provide any suggestions and remember this is only the basic lesson outline and does not include rich questioning or pupil analysis of the cognitive challenge of individual expressions. A resource for L5+ or grade C pupils. Requires Maths Watch videos. There is a linked lesson at L4+ in my resources if this is too demanding. Once again the basis for a lesson and does not contain the lesson plan or rich questioning resources. It should also be followed with some worded problems and contextual examples which I may add soon? Please add any suggestions to comments for improvements. Mathematics of Words V - Speed Formulae

This level 5+ resource can be delivered in maths or science and should take two to three hours to deliver. Ideally the speed section should be combined with some simple practical activity around falling objects (terminal speed) or cars down a slope. The worksheet is also useful for extension. There is an extension section at the end for L6 students to construct formula. Follow me on twitter for updates on latest resources: https://twitter.com/boostprogress

Sharing a couple of lesson resources on these topics, using earth and moon comparisons and then moving onto pressure calculations, with a good maths exercise thrown in for good measure. Finally a nice literacy task describing how people survive high and low pressure environments. As always the basic resource for lesson content and practical approaches. Please leave comments and feedback and follow @boostprogress and @CE4ET.
