AFL - Self Assessment - 3 faces

I train the pupils in my class to attach one of these self assessment strips to each piece of work that they complete. Each pupil staples the horizontal strip with the three different faces on to every piece of work when they have completed it. The pupils then select the appropriate face and colour it with the appropriate colour depending on whether they have met the success criteria of the task/lesson.

Collaborative Group work strategy flashcards

These flashcards are always on dispaly in my classroom and are constantly referred to by myself and by the pupils in my class. The cards display different 'working with others' strategies - each has picture representation and a worded explanation. They help greatly with developing children's thinking skills and also deveop pupils ability to work effectively in pairs/groups.

Circletime Rules poster

In my classroom circletime is an essential part of our school day. It takes place every morning and it begins with a checking in activity. Other activities follow and it helps set the tone for the rest of the school day. The success of circletime depends on the setting up of circletime rules which are clearly and brightly displayedon this poster.

Seren yr wythnos certificate

This certificate can be used as a whole school initiative, promoting and encouraging excellent behaviour, positive attitudes towards learning and bilingualism across the curriculum. We use it in our school on a weekly basis - each Friday we hold a whole school celebration assembly in which 1 child from each class is awarded a seren yr wythnos certificate based on their performance that week.

Thinking mats for pupils in groups of 4

These thinking mats are perfect for use during group activities. The children need to be placed in groups of 4 and each given post it notes. Each child has his/her own section of the mat on which they can post their own ideas. The children then discuss all the ideas that have been added in each section of the mat and decide on the best idea or combined ideas which are then placed in the middle of the mat. This group activity aid cuts out all quarrelling!

AFL Faces for nursery and foundation phase pupils

This resource is used and loved by the teachers in our nursery and Reception classes. The children get to stick a face onto their work/painting/art & craft work etc and then draw either a smiley face or a sad face depending on how they felt about their performance during the task. This is a great way of introducing AFL early on in a child's education and helps them progress to higher level AFL strategies as they move through the school.
