What is it?
An interactive resource designed to enhance understanding of the basic principles of living things. This resource engages students in a practical exploration of what differentiates living organisms from non-living and once-living objects. By focusing on real-world objects and using the MRS GREN criteria (Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition), students work in groups or individually to classify objects and discuss their findings.
What’s Included?
A series of worksheets centered around a variety of objects.
Guidance for teachers on how to use the resource and facilitate discussions.
Flexibility for teachers to choose objects based on availability and educational goals.
Designed to promote group collaboration and individual thinking, this resource provides an interactive approach to learning. Students will use critical thinking to classify objects and understand what truly defines living organisms. This resource is an excellent way to make biology relatable and fascinating for students!
Key Skills Developed
Critical Thinking: - Encourages students to analyze and categorize objects based on biological criteria.
Collaboration - Fosters teamwork and communication, especially in group settings.
Scientific Inquiry - Enhances understanding of basic biology concepts and the MRS GREN criteria.
Presentation Skills - Develops students’ abilities to present and justify their conclusions to the class.
Engagement with Science - Makes learning about living organisms interactive and relatable.

This is a complete, go-to unit of work designed to promote the development of practical and scientific inquiry skills at Key stage 3. Pupils are tasked at investigating the concentration of salt solution that will allow the efficient hydrogen production when water is electrolysed. The framework for this investigation is set within the global energy crisis and how science can be used to solve real-world problems. It includes, teachers notes, a student work booklet and a presentation to set the scene. The objective is to allow the pupils to work with others and apply the Scientific method to an investigation aligned with their curriculum. It is designed as a stand alone unit or it would work well with elements, compounds and mixtures.
I developed these resources for KS3 because we are moving some of our assessments towards the assessment of practical skills rather than just written theory tests. each unit includes assessment criteria.
**Student Workbook - Designed to encourage students to think critically and explore concepts and serves as a record of the investigation, guiding the pupils through each of the tasks. this can be completed and used for assessment for lower ability pupils and those that require support. For higher ability pupils, this can be used a framework and notes for generating their own scientific report.
**Teacher’s Notes **- Includes background information, experimental setup, and safety tips.
Saves time on preparation and helps you focus on teaching.
Introductory Presentation - A simple yet informative presentation to introduce the topic.
Covers the basics and designed to spark interest and form the foundation for questions
Designed to develop
Enhances Scientific Inquiry - It’s a great way to introduce students to scientific methods and experimental science.
The content aligns well with the post-primary science curriculum.
Pre-prepared materials mean less time planning and more time engaging with your students.
Practical Learning Experience - Hands-on activities make learning more impactful and memorable.
Relevant Topic -With a growing focus on sustainable energy, understanding hydrogen fuel is more relevant than ever.
This unit is designed to make your life easier and to make science more accessible and interesting for your students. It’s a practical, no-nonsense resource made by a teacher, for teachers.
Ignite your classroom with this Rocket Science Thematic Unit, tailored specifically for KS3 but easily adaptable for other key stages. This interactive, skills-based unit links of Physics and Maths, stimulating students to tap into their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
