(SECTION A) Based upon two contrasting sources (also supplied) which are a modern section of journalism from famine conditions in Somalia and a 1849 comment on poor living conditions in Bermondsey in London. Detailed explantions of the requirements for each question- with sample answers. Sheets included of possible answers for students to annotate. Visuals include discussions points for the language techniques used by the writer. Opportunities for PEER marking and DIRT with feedback on performance.

Provides opportunities for interesting class discussion as well as writing to persuade. Identifying language techniques and the impact they can have on a reader. Sections and examples for students to use in their books with “model” answers. Links to songs and recordings of the speeches. Provides a very thought provoking lesson for all!

Includes a powerpoint with objectives based upon including a variety of vocabulary in creative writing. Presents students with images and sounds to interest them and provoke discussion into using a range of words to describe what they can see. Students should then start to create a short descriptive piece based upon a stormy image. Opportunity to work in pairs and groups. Students will then use an extract from a student’s piece of writing and fill in the gaps with vocabulary choices. They have the opportunity to grade the work. Finally they can peer assess each others writing and set targets to improve. Links to the GCSE English Language Paper 1 Creative Writing section.
