This lesson is created as a Flipchart for use with Active Inspire software. It works with older versions of Active Inspire.
This flipchart is one that I have used with bi-lingual children to discuss tense, and assess their abilities to change tense in speaking and writing, as well as noticing grammar and punctuation issues. It could work well in any classroom if you are putting a focus on tense and error correcting.
This lesson is written in a flipchart created for use with Active Inspire programming.
This is a lesson that I used to teach the children in my class about algorithms and programs in computing. It is an unplugged lesson, no computers required! It explains how coding works in a child friendly way. I used it with Year 4 at the beginning of our coding topic.
I created this Minions warning chart for my class this year. I printed this in landscape A3 and then printed and laminated little tags with the children's names on - but you could use pegs, or sticky labels as well. This works really well as my children love Minions and we always have a discussion about how some people are heading towards the 'purple' minions. I have used quite strong wording on this chart, as my class can be quite challenging, but you can alter this to use your own, or your schools' preferred language if you like.
Krystof Penderecki's Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima is an interesting piece of programme music.
This activity asks Pupils to listen to the piece (on YouTube) and look at a part of the score (attached) and state what they can see or hear that is interesting about this piece.
This activity is great for discussion purposes also. What is music? Does it always need to sound 'nice'? etc.
This presentation contains information abut Minimalism as a genre of Music.
There are many examples given with some analysis information.
A great resource for examples of Minimalist Music.
This presentation contains a full lesson with starter and plenary.
Starter involves pupils listening to two pieces and colouring and drawing - leads to a discussion of the differences between impressionism and expressionism.
Examples are given.
Serialism is included with a description of how to fill in a serialism matrix.
The matrix worksheet is provided. Some parts of filling in the matrix may need to be scaffolded by a teacher.
Informative lesson material.
I’m not kidding!
5 Presentations and two example analysis worksheets are downloadable from this one source.
Presentations with plenty of examples of the composers work include:
John Williams (Star Wars)
James Newton Howard (The Village)
Hans Zimmer (Batman)
Danny Elfman (Edward Scissorhands)
Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future)
The two example analysis sheets contain the youtube link to the song being analysed.
Hedwig’s Theme from Harry Potter
Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Carribean
Some links may need to be replaced to some of these pieces as the resource was created several years ago now.
This presentation and worksheet is a lesson in itself!
Pupils are given the worksheet with songs and the musical elements on it - and the presentation gives basic information about 6 Musicals from the 70’s and 80’s including Phantom of the Opera, Hair, Godspell and Les Miserables.
Pupils listen to each song in turn and use their worksheet to analyse each piece of music.
A great fun lesson!
This presentation and worksheet is a lesson in itself!
Pupils are given the worksheet with songs and the musical elements on it - and the presentation gives basic information about 5 Early musicals including West Side Story, My Fair Lady and Guys and Dolls.
Pupils listen to each song in turn and use their worksheet to analyse each piece of music.
A great fun lesson!
New! Flipchart has been replaced by a PPTX.
This is a lesson I have used with children who did not work well together in groups. There is discussion about what it means to be a team, they have to define what groupwork is, and there is an exercise which will make a great display (a good reminder if it is placed in the classroom). This could be used if group work behaviour is slipping, or at the beginning of the year to re-enforce the idea of working in teams/groups.
This is a lesson Flipchart. The Flipchart was made for Active Inspire boards.
This lesson was used with a higher level Year 4 class - real world maths! They had to use their knowledge of odd and even and addition to figure out the barcode trick, and check that the barcodes were written correctly. This was great fun, and really tested some of their skills.
"Find me a musical which uses a story from the Bible..."
and much more!
This 20 questions internet research game is a fun pupil-led activity where they will learn a surprising amount about Musical Theatre. They will discover both older and more modern musicals and some questions are much trickier than others!
For extension you could ask pupils to find the 'vital statistics' of each musical as they go -ie. date of premiere, stars performing in it, where it has been performed.
Answer sheet is on the second page.
Happy searching!
This document is a list of the different types of song or instrumental piece that you might find in a Musical.
Useful for a revision hand out or could be used to further explore Musical Theatre.
This activity asks pupils to use the musical elements to compare and contrast 3 songs.
Due to copyright law I won't put MP3's of the songs but they can be easily accessed on YouTube.
There are 2 sheets where pupils will use a Venn Diagram to compare the songs.
Great practise for exams and for understanding analysis.
This worksheet can be used as part of English lessons where there is a class reading book, as part of independent work, for comprehension lessons or for guided reading.
Sheet asks the children to review the chapters of their book - liked, disliked, predict.
This lesson plan and presentation will help children understand how to infer a character's feelings rather than just writing the emotion.
It involves a fun starter for the teacher - a little bit of acting, which the children love!
If you are not a fan of acting you could get away with the text at the beginning of the presentation and the discussion.
Children will end up writing their own paragraph inferring what a character is feeling.
Differentiated planning.
This lesson involves the playing of "Simon Says" to understand prepositions and prepositional phrases.
there is lots of discussion and class writing a list of prepositions they know.
Lots of movement and partner work.
The worksheets are differentiated into LA, MA, HA with extension.
Lots of fun and action in this lesson!
A Practise Diary created for children taking One on One or Group Lessons of instruments in a school setting.
Contains space for:
goals for the year
one on one lesson comments
group lesson comments
lesson times for the next week
colouring in bar of how much practise they did and how useful it was
Was very useful as a peripatetic music specialist for Primary children.
Children can learn about the different rhyme schemes of Quatrains (4 line rhyming poems) using the theme of Christmas. Perfect for the last week before the Christmas holidays for creating poems to write in Christmas cards.
Takes into consideration those of other faiths and suggests they could create a poem or card for another holiday.
LO: to write a quatrain (four line poem)
Bronze: I can write an ABAB rhyming quatrain.
Silver: I can experiment with ABBA, AABB rhyme schemes.
Gold: I can write poems with ABAB, ABBA, AABB and ABCB rhyme schemes.
Great for the less organised children in your class!
This basic resource gives a series of steps and time limits which you can stick on the children's desks to ensure that they are ready to begin learning as soon as possible.
I originally created this resource for use with SEN children but found that it worked great with my whole class!
