This Giver activity simulates that ceremony, bringing to life the reality of having a job assigned to you and providing the opportunity for discussion around what would be good and bad about being assigned a job. This Giver activity uses the list of Top 200 Jobs of 2013 from CareerCast.com. You can see the complete list and the criteria for the job rankings HERE!!! Using the Top 25 jobs and the Bottom 25 jobs, students will receive 2 jobs, one from the top and one from the bottom, but they won't know which one is which until after they've written their thoughts about the job and its description. Then we walk through the 52-slide PowerPoint that shows each job's ranking and salary. It's always interesting to see how the students' thoughts about a job changes when they see the rank and the salary. It's also eye-opening for them to see all the potential jobs out there. The catch is . . . all these offenses happen in Romeo and Juliet. Students will then need to analyze and discuss the ethics and morality packed into each "crime." They'll rank them from worst to least, then decide what punishment should appropriately fit the crime.
