The set of instructional materials includes two types of organizers: one to promote reading as research and the second to promote analytic thinking through comparison. Included in the document are clear instructions on how to use the materials and an example to support instruction in teaching comparison. This resource can be used to differentiate instruction and assess prior knowledge as well as student growth through reading, speaking, and listening. These organizers ask students to go beyond the K-W-L and identify where informational text supports what they know, clarifies or corrects their thinking, and adds to their knowledge base. Used in its entirety, this set of PDF form documents support Common Core Reading Anchor Standards #1 and #9 as well as Writing Anchor Standard #8. Did you know the most single referenced cognitive thought process emphasized throughout the Common Core Reading Standards is "compare." Using this set of organizers (appropriate for all grades...I have personally used them in both primary and high school with no problem!), you can promote higher level thinking skills, develop background knowledge, and teach your students how to structure a comparative analysis.
