Family and Me - KS1 PSHE A collection of PSHE resources that have been created to cover the ‘Relationships’ strand of the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study for KS1. In particular, the resources in this bundle focus on different kinds of families and the positive aspects of family life. The 3-lesson unit includes the following: People who care for me (Year 1) This lesson discusses people in our lives who are important to us. We will look at those who take care of us in various ways including but not limited to parents, guardians, friends, siblings, extended family, teachers, and healthcare workers. What is a family (Year 1) This lesson explores different kinds of families including single-parent, two parent, blended, and foster families. The lesson also highlights same-sex relationships in an age-appropriate context (some children have two mummies / two daddies.) Family and me (Year 1) This lesson explores the positive aspects of family life including celebrations, holidays, and enjoying spending time together. We will also discuss ways of getting help if we are ever upset or worried about a family member or something that has happened at home. Each lesson includes a variety of fun and creative activities, plus enough teaching materials to last at least an hour. The lessons in this unit have been specifically created for use with students in Year 1, however, they are also suitable for use with students in Year 2. An Introduction to puberty - Year 4 / 5 Our Introduction to puberty PSHE Unit for KS2 contains 4 lessons following the new DfE Statutory Guidance and the PSHE Association’s suggested themed approach for Puberty and Growing Up (Health and Wellbeing strand). The lessons have been left editable and are filled with engaging, well differentiated and fun activities. They are designed to be ‘no prep’, so you can just pick them up and use them, although they are allso adaptable should you wish to. The unit serves as an introduction to the physical and emotional changes students will experience during puberty. The contents of this unit include: Growing up - girls An introduction to girls’ puberty, growing up, changing bodies and the female reproductive organs. This lesson focuses on the major changes that most girls face during pubery, in particular breast development and menstruation. We will discuss strategies for managing menstruation and highlight the fact that we are all different, and everyone develops at a different rate. Growing up - boys This lesson follows on from the girls’ puberty lesson and introduces the major changes that boys commonly experience. This lesson highlights changes such as growth spurts, erections, wet dreams, body odor and oily skin. The lesson also discusses ways that we can manage these changes. Personal Hygiene The third lesson in this series focuses on cleanliness, and how changes during puberty often mean that we need to pay closer attention to our personal hygiene. Changing Emotions In this lesson, the students will learn about the emotional and changes that boys and girls commonly experience during puberty. We will discuss the impact of hormones such as estrogen and testosterone on our mood. The lesson touches on topics such as mood swings, premenstrual syndrome, feelings of aggression, irritability and low mood, as well as ways that we can manage these symptoms.

We will discuss the reasons why recycling is so important as well as taking a closer look at the different types of materials that can and can’t be recycled. The students will read Why do we recycle? by Jen Green, before completing an activity linked to the text. The lesson includes a case study starter, a story with accompanying questions, a recycling sorting task and a debate-style plenary. Plastic and pollution In this lesson, the children will learn about the vast quantity of plastic that is finding its way into rivers and oceans. We will discuss the impact of plastics on wildlife and the consequences of microplastics entering the food chain . The students will read A planet full of plastic by Neal Layton, before completing an awareness leaflet activity linked to the text. The lesson includes a case study starter, a story with accompanying questions, an awareness leaflet activity and a plenary task. Global warming / climate change In this lesson, the children will learn about climate change and the reasons why our world is getting warmer. We will discuss the harmful effects of greenhouse gases and the different ways we can help to lessen the effects of global warming.
