An assembly all about turning over a new leaf and being ambitious and changing your attitude. There is a big focus on working hard and how you can change your mindset to be more positive at any time. It lasts about 15 -20 minutes if clips are watched and questions asked too. The assembly uses the story of how Jay-Z escaped a tough childhood and gangs by working incredibly hard and throwing himself into writing and music. It follows Shawn (the young Jay-Z - hopefully students won’t recognise who the assembly is about until the end) as he grows up as a troubled boy in Brooklyn, through the departure of his father, his grades slipping at school and how he eventually reached a crossroads. With encouragement from his mother, young Shawn decided to change his attitude and make a fresh start. The assembly emphasises the importance of hard work, staying positive and taking the opportunity presented by making a fresh start in life - which can be especially related to at the beginning of a school term. There are optional clips to watch throughout and teacher notes (in the slide notes of the PowerPoint) with suggested questions that can be posed at each point and ideas to reflect on. Two assemblies which focus on the work done by the MACS charity (Microphthalmia, Anophthalmia and Coloboma Support). MACS is a charity for young people who were born without eyes or with underdeveloped eyes, so the assemblies focus on the importance of valuing our vision and how we should treat everyone with respect and without prejudice. The assemblies focus on the work MACS do to help and support young people. One of the assemblies is to raise awareness of the work MACS does and the other is for schools interested in fundraising for the charity. These are especially useful for schools teaching topics on prejudice and discrimination and also schools with a child who uses MACS’ services. A detailed reading comprehension all about the recent ‘Momo Challenge’ (no pictures of Momo included) and the dangers of online challenges that this hoax has highlighted. This reading comprehension includes three sets of differentiated challenge questions, so with reading, discussion and answering the questions this will keep a group busy for 25-30 mins. It is perfect for Form Time or an activity in any English or PSHE lesson. The article, written by journalist R E Hunt (who has kindly let us share her work) investigates the irony behind the Momo Challenge - where the fear and harm from the sight of Momo were actually spread by the news media trying to warn parents about it. The article contains a serious message - Momo was a hoax - but a hoax based upon reality. It reiterates how young people can stay safe and use their critical thinking skills not to fall victim to future Momos. Complete 1 hour lesson based around documentary with starter handout and worksheet. Credit to Channel 4 for documentary linked. The documentary is about an Orthodox Jewish man who attempts to reintegrate in a strict community after becoming involved with criminals and spending time in prison. It’s great for seeing day to day life in an Orthodox Jewish community in Britain, but isn’t essential to the module so don’t worry if you don’t have time.

An engaging revision pack that helps students to revise Religious Studies GCSE. This was made for Islam AQA Spec A but is easily amendable. The lesson allows students to develop board games to help other students revise from. Students are given opportunities to reflect on the requirements of the Religious Studies GCSE and think about how they can guide other students to be successful. Also included: Islam GCSE Revision AQA Book (made for Spec A but easily amended) An illustrated and jam packed revision book for Islam GCSE. Useful for any Islam Spec. This can easily be printed out and given to students without having to explain any of the terminology as all explanation is here for them.
