A quick oral translation activity for students to do in pairs to practise conjugation verbs in the perfect tense in French - very similar sentences are used firstly from L2 to L1, then the other way round.

This could be a starter but could also take up a whole lesson - students are encouraged to compare Julieta’s two male partners and consider how they contrast. You can give them pointers to help them eg. physical appearance, qualities, type of job, background etc. and get them to consider who Julieta was better off with and why, what the director wants us to think of each of them and the overall messages.

A 3-page worksheet to introduce the use of the pronoun ‘en’ in different set phrases for talking about food. Very little prior knowledge is assumed other than some basic opinions on food items, and some time phrases like souvent and jamais, so this lesson should appear in a sequence after pupils have acquired those. It is practised mainly in the present tense, but extension tasks are provided in other tenses, Activities include a match-up, grammar explanation, teacher-led listening, translation into English, sentence unjumbling task and a short, guided sentence-writing task. A 3-page worksheet / activity sequence explaining how to use the pronouns en and y in set phrases for the topic of free time / hobbies / les loisirs / le temps libre. Ideal for helping pupils to integrate these into their writing to score higher marks for complexity / use of ‘complex structures’. The principles for how en and y work are briefly explained, but the pronouns are mostly practised in the context of useful phrases on the topic, including with negatives and time phrases. There is also a stage combining them with the present tense with depuis to enhance the complexity of students’ sentences. Activities include a brief grammar explanation to read, a matching task, a teacher-led listening, multiple-choice, translations and a writing task. All answers included. Suitable for KS4 French or very able KS3 pupils as extension work. Ideal for encouraging pupils to incorporate more complex grammar and structures into their work by scaffolding extended sentences with causal markers, as well as containing lots of verb + infinitive structures and complex opinion phases.
