As we look at A Midsummer Night’s Dream we look at how Bottom and the Mechnicals are introduced to the audience and analyse the types of characters they are through key quotes used in their first scene. We look at Shakespeare’s use of names and make predictions about how these characters will fit into the play later on, plus consider the generic and thematic importance of such characters for more able students. Fully differentiated throughout.
Gothic sentences can be quite tricky, but this lesson support students in analysing Gothic fiction extracts for sentence types (simple, complex, compound) before students create their own descriptions of Gothic settings and peer assess their work based around the use of sentence types analysed during the lesson. A very useful lesson for both KS3 and KS4 students.

Focussing on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and in particular Stave Two, this lesson looks at how Fan and Belle are presented to the reader and their effects on the character of Scrooge - both as a young man and as an old one. We will look carefully at the use of language used to describe Scrooge and Belle’s meeting and analyse what Scrooge would be thinking when Belle ‘releases’ him from his engagement. A great lesson for KS4 students preparing for English Literature exams and easily adaptable for younger years as well.
Of Mice and Men lesson where we focus on how Curley is introduced in Chapter Two of John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men and look at some key quotes surrounding the character. We analyse the use of language within these quotes and think carefully about how Steinbeck is able to get across Curley’s personality to the reader. Fully differentiated activities and worksheets throughout.
A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that provides students with the opportunities to review the mark scheme requirements of AQA English Literature Paper 2 Q2 or the Power and Conflict comparison question. Moreover, a model answer is provided which students analyse for comparisons, analytical features and reflect on their own analytical strengths. Students then write their own answer and peer assess focussing on their own success criteria. Ideal preparation for KS4 students as move towards exams and easily adaptable for KS3 students.
Revise Macbeth with key quotes! A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that supports students in the run-up to the AQA English Literature Paper 1 exam by providing detailed and relevant revision activities. The lesson also includes a detailed pack of key quotes from across the play that is divided up into characters, but the lesson supports students to approach learning quotes from the viewpoint of different themes as well. Definitely worth a download as we fast approach the exam!
Update: I’ve added about 15 pages of quotes, activities, a PETAZL paragraph model and activities and more! Now includes a huge bank of quotes for students to analyse and make notes on.
We as study An Inspector Calls we analyse Arthur Birling, the patriarch of the family and a man of considerable power. But does JB Priestley want us to respect Birling or mock him? Is Birling shown as a capitalist or a socialist? What values does he represent? This lesson covers how Birling is presented right up to the introduction of The Inspector in Act One.
