Detailed Gothic assessment preparation lesson that focuses on an extract from a Wilkie Collins short story. The lesson helps students to analyse key quotes, make interpretations around the main characters and how they are presented, to evaluate the use of language features and to make notes on answering a GCSE style assessment task. We analyse the use of language in the Inspector’s speech and explore the emotions and thoughts of the different characters one Goole leaves. An ideal lesson for KS4 students prepare for English Literature exams and easily adaptable for KS3. Worth a download!
An introductory lesson to Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan that focuses on narrative hooks and how Shan introduces his protagonist in the first chapter. Students also create their own PETAZL analytical paragraphs and peer assess each other’s work based on strict success criteria. Designed for KS3 students but the resources on narrative hooks can easily be adapted for KS4 and other year groups.
