War poetry lesson that explores Jessie Pope’s War Girls and asks students to evaluate whether her perspective on the roles of women during World War I is contemporary or radical. Students explore what kind of roles women took on during the fighting and how this impacted on society at the end of 1918. A detailed poetry lesson that analyses structure through caesuras and enjambent in William Stafford’s At The Bomb Testing Site. We explore perspective and how viewing the awful power of nuclear devices through the eyes of a lizard actually creates more of an effect for the reader, before going to look at how pace and tension can be manipulated through caesuras, enjambment and structure. War poetry lesson that supports students to analyse In Flanders Fields by John McCrae. Students develop an understanding of the poppy as a symbol before transferring this to an analysis of the poem. We look at language and structure in detail, including how the poet adapts the form of a rondeau. A very useful lesson for Remembrance Day, as well as for both KS3 and KS4 students preparing for English Literature exams or unseen poetry.
War poetry lesson that looks at The Man He Killed by Thomas Hardy. We explore what happened during the Christmas Truce of 1914 and how the soldiers on opposing sides viewed each other. We then use this as a way in to Hardy’s poem, looking at how the speaker feels about the soldier he has killed and why and tie this in to changing attitudes about the Boer War of 1899 - 1902. Finally, students begin to make comparisons between this poem and one other they have studied. Ideal lesson for KS3 and useful for KS4 English Literature and Unseen Poetry exam prep.
Simon Armitage poem The Manhunt is a fantastic piece for KS3 students because of its use of language, structure and form and how the speaker conveys their feelings on war and the effects of conflict on relationships, long after the fighting has finished. This lesson helps students to analyse language techniques, structure and more, as well as exploring war and its effects on people. A very useful lesson for both KS3 and KS4 students preparing for unseen poetry exams.
