Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde lesson that explores Search for Mr Hyde (Chapter 2), how Hyde is described, how Utterson is presented and the language Stevenson uses to describe Hyde. A fully differentiated and resourced lesson that focusses on Utterson’s conversation with Lanyon about Jekyll, the way Stevenson describes Hyde and how he engages his readers with his use of language. We look at how Paris is reintroduced to the audience, how Romeo and Juliet say good bye to each other, how Juliet reacts to her parents’ decision to marry her off to Paris and their reaction to how she behaves after hearing this news. An Inspector Calls but with a difference! Students create their own independent writing pieces having studied the play. Students have a choice of activities which are progressively more challenging, but also learn how to use semicolons and colons beforehand to embed into their new writing pieces. An engaging, challenging and differentiated lesson that is useful for both English Literature AND English Language preparation (in terms of descriptive and narrative writing), but particularly useful to use at the end of a unit of work on the play when students are looking for opportunities to use their creativity and show off their writing skills. AQA English Language Paper 1 Section A lesson that uses an extract from AQA’s Paper 1 reading resource (available here: https://filestore.aqa.org.uk/resources/english/AQA-87001-RSB.PDF) from Hilary Mantel’s Bring Up The Bodies to help students look at how new characters and themes are introduced to the reader, and make inferences about those characters through the ways they are introduced.
