We look at language and structure in detail, including how the poet adapts the form of a rondeau. A very useful lesson for Remembrance Day, as well as for both KS3 and KS4 students preparing for English Literature exams or unseen poetry.

War poetry lesson that looks at The Man He Killed by Thomas Hardy. We explore what happened during the Christmas Truce of 1914 and how the soldiers on opposing sides viewed each other. We then use this as a way in to Hardy’s poem, looking at how the speaker feels about the soldier he has killed and why and tie this in to changing attitudes about the Boer War of 1899 - 1902. Finally, students begin to make comparisons between this poem and one other they have studied. Ideal lesson for KS3 and useful for KS4 English Literature and Unseen Poetry exam prep.
