Sonnet to Lost Love - Comprehension
Item includes a lesson plan, students’ work sheet, teacher’s answer sheet and PowerPoint. Students are encouraged to identify the sonnet format and study the imagery and symbolism in the poem. They will be encouraged to use dictionaries to find definitions and complete a cloze procedure, which develops the skill of selecting the most appropriate and effective vocabulary. Explore the theme of ‘letting go’ with this lively, rhyming poem, that references everyday objects and situations that young people can relate to. The easy advice is quite ‘tongue-in-cheek’ as the poem concludes that ‘letting go’ of hurts, memories, relationships is not an easy thing to do after all. This could also be used to stimulate discussions in PSHCE, about how we can deal with negative emotions, as opposed to ‘stuffing them down’ as the poet describes. Students are encouraged to produce their own descriptive writing.
