Quelle est la date? Beginners French KS2 / KS3 (Year 4, 5, 6 and 7) Printable Speaking Games for revision of calendar and date vocabulary: 10 Four in a Row game boards and a Snakes and Ladders Board for practising saying the date in French. These resources will help you plan multiple lessons at Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3 (upper Primary and early Secondary and equivalents) for students beginning French or near beginners requiring revision of basic vocab and phrases. Originally made for UK schools, I have also added US date format versions of both resources.

FOUR IN A ROW
I originally created this to help pupils answer the French question 'Quelle est la date?' but there is no reference to French on the boards so they can also be used for Italian, Spanish, German and other languages. Pupils will practise calendar vocabulary - months (les mois), days of the week (les jours de la semaine) and numbers to thirty-one.
Includes:
5 boards with the month and date
5 further boards with the month, date and day
A fun language learning activity - ideal for a starter, early finisher task, main lesson consolidation work or as part of a bank of revision activities. Print in either A3 or A4 and laminate for regular use. Individuals or pairs play against each other, taking it in turns to roll a dice before choosing a date in the correct column (columns are labelled 1-6) to say in the target language. If correct, they could put their symbol or initial over it in a wipeable pen or cover it with a counter of a different colour to their opponent. The first player/team to get 4 in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally is the winner. With 10 boards in total, they can swap with other pairs/groups when finished to have another game.
SNAKES AND LADDERS
Pupils play as per normal Snakes and Ladders, only they have to say the date they land on in French. The US date format version of the game is on page 2 of the file. Instructions are on page 3.

This 77-slide presentation (and more slides for games) introduces and reviews key vocabulary and phrases and includes activities and tasks. It covers the basics for beginners or near beginners.
I have included 3 versions of the PowerPoint in the Zip file with a small number of differences to words and spellings to suit UK / Ireland, Canadian and US teachers. Three slightly different versions of this game are included, with minor changes to a small number of phrases with locations in them. This is to better suit learners in US & Canada (Page 1 of the PDF), Australia and New Zealand (Page 2), and UK and Ireland (Page 3). All phrases used in the game feature on the vocabulary card so if you are not teaching in any of these countries, you will still be able to use the game. The vocabulary card can support younger, less experienced, or less able students.
Brief instructions for students are printed on the board, together with fuller instructions on Page 5 of the PDF file. In turn, students roll a dice and move the appropriate number of spaces. They have to say aloud in German the word, phrase or question they land on, otherwise they return to the space they came from.
You may wish to print the board in A3 for larger groups but it works well in A4 too.

The games revolve around a total of 256 sentences which model a variety of structures so that while children are learning about the spelling of commonly confused words they are also learning about how to use a range of openers, connectives, sub-clauses etc to construct interesting sentences. Many sentences are silly to further engage children!
It’s a challenge to make SPaG work active and engaging, rather than relying solely on worksheets and these homophones splat games are ideal for fun consolidation during the main part of SPaG lessons or can be used as purposeful early finisher and/or starter activities. If you print and laminate them all, children could self-select the homophones they need to practise.
It is best played in small groups, where children each take a sentence card which features 8 sentences with a homophone word in it (homophone words are printed in bold). Children take it in turns to read a sentence from their card while the others compete to splat the correct homophone flashcard (homophone flashcards are included in black and white as well as fun colour ‘explosion’ style cards so you can choose which to print). The first student to hit the correct homophone word scores a point. Students could lose a point for hitting the wrong word to stop them being tempted to guess early.
The PowerPoint includes a slide for each game and features the homophone words for splatting as a whole class version on a ‘splattable’ whiteboard, should you so wish.

If you are teaching Describing People in French (Personality Descriptions) at KS2 or KS3 or equivalents, use this substantial KS2 and KS3 Les Traits de Caractere / de Personnalite) PowerPoint Lesson Presentation (also in PDF format). It’s full of teaching points and activities to introduce and consolidate 20 adjectives and linked questions and phrases. There’s a set of printable flash cards too. SCHOOL PLAN DRAWING GAME
A flexible speaking game for pairs, groups, or whole class. Students listen to sentences describing the location of school items and draw quick sketches on their blank plan in the correct locations. Quel temps fait-il? The resources focus on 12 phrases: il pleut, il neige, il gele, il fait beau, il fait mauvais, il fait chaud, il fait froid, il y a des nuages, il y a du brouillard, il y a de l’orage, il y a du soleil, il y a du vent.
FOUR IN A ROW: 3 game boards. Print in colour or black and white and laminate as required (use dry-wipe pens). First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins. Students roll dice, then choose a weather phrase from that number column and say it in French.
BOARD GAME: In turn, players roll dice and move the appropriate number of spaces. If they can say aloud in French the correct weather on the space they land on, they stay there etc. CHALLENGE VERSION: Students say the weather in the location they land on. (Il y a du soleil à Paris / Il y a du brouillard au Canada etc.)
BINGO: 14 cards (the teacher could read out French weather phrases) or use for Noughts and Crosses, with students taking it in turns to say aloud a French weather phrase. You could laminate and use dry-wipe pens.
LOOP GAME: A 12-card set, which forms a continuous loop. Distribute among players. First player reads the English language side of one of their cards and then all players check if they have the French translation. If they do, they will read out both sides of their card.

25th January is Burns Night when people all over the world with Scottish connections attend a Burns Supper. Celebrate the life and poems of Scotland’s national Bard this January - or at any other time of the year - with these differentiated non-fiction / informational text reading passages with comprehension questions, a cloze procedure task, discussion writing prompt card and a crossword puzzle. They were designed for upper Primary (Upper KS2 - Years 5 and 6 and equivalents) or early Secondary (KS3 - Year 7). These close reading tasks and other activities are in an 18-page PDF. A US version with minor spelling changes is also included in the Zip file.

Please check the preview to assess suitability. The non fiction comprehension and cloze task are provided at two levels of challenge, therefore they will suit a range of year groups and provide appropriate levels of challenge for different abilities within many classes.
Famous Scottish poet Robert Burns (often known as Rabbie Burns) was born on January 25 1759 and became one of the world’s best known writers. On Burns Night, his life and achievements are celebrated in Scotland and all over the world, especially in countries where many Scots have emigrated, such as Canada.
I am designing these non-fiction comprehension and activities packs to provide a time-saving bank of flexible themed tasks linked to dates throughout the year, though of course you can use them whenever you want. They feature very short texts (about 250 - 300 words). Each provides comprehension questions, a cloze procedure task and other linked tasks. The other tasks are on aspects of spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, writing or reading (this varies across the different packs). Build all activities into your Literacy / English programme, or use for cover lessons, homework, early finisher tasks or for those busy times when you need something low-prep, meaningful, relevant and engaging at the last minute!
CONTENTS:

Cloze procedure task (2 levels) – using same passage
Comprehension questions (2 levels) – using same passage
Discussion writing prompt card (with and without background color) - this will help students to write a balanced argument about whether Burns is the greatest Scot ever. Students could carry out research to expand on the arguments and explore further points, if you want them to write a more detailed piece.
Burns Supper crossword puzzle (research task) - the text provides some answers but this will require internet access to search for most answers (unless they have done a Burns study)

This New Year, your students can learn about the Christian Feast of the Epiphany (January 6) or Three Kings Day (El Dia de Los Reyes) with these differentiated January nonfiction reading passages with comprehension questions, cloze procedure task, compare and contrast activity, and fun crossword puzzle were designed for upper Primary (Upper KS2 - Years 5 and 6 and equivalents) or early Secondary (KS3 - Year 7). While using and developing their literacy skills, students will learn about Three Wise Men and their role within the Christmas Story as well as finding out about the significance of Epiphany to Christians and some of the various traditions associated with this religious celebration in different countries. Winter Creative Writing Story Prompts
Fun starter! Practise percents of quantities or amounts with this treasure hunt, scavenger hunt or relay type activity. It’s an active printable mental maths team game, with differentiation, ideal as a whole class starter or plenary at KS2 (Year 5 / Year 6) and early KS3 (Year 7), especially when focusing on percentages of amounts / percents of a number. It can be played multiple times in a lesson or across several lessons as groups can use different card sets each time. Teams complete a treasure hunt-type chain of percentages calculations, followed by a ‘Find the Target Number’ mental maths challenge, using a mixture of the four operations. There are 54 double-sided cards, forming sets of 6 cards for 9 teams. A key feature is the chance to involve lower ability pupils in a fun whole class activity to give them a boost of confidence without it being obvious their calculations are less challenging (3 of the sets are at an easier level). Full instructions for teacher and pupils is included, along with solutions.

Students collaborate on a treasure hunt type maths trail and when they’ve collected all 5 answers, they are given a target, which they must make using 3 given numbers. You can print and laminate the cards in batches of 3 sets, so if you don’t require them all, you needn’t print them. The cards should be printed double-sided (they’ve been laid out to facilitate this). I print by selecting the ‘2-Sided Short Edge (Top)’ option. However, if you can only print one-sided, print all the even-numbered pages, replace the paper, and print the odd-numbered pages on the back.
Give each team their ‘Start’ card. Spread out all other cards, answer side up. You may wish to remove cards from any set not being used, although this is not necessary. On your signal, teams turn over their Start card and complete the calculation. Each team sends one person to collect the correct answer card, on the other side of which will be their next question and a letter to confirm which team it belongs to. Ensure teams immediately replace any cards not marked with their letter. The process continues until the team have answered all five calculations. On the other side of the final answer card will be a target number, which teams must make, using the numbers printed in boxes in the bottom right corner of 3 of their cards. Use all 3 numbers and only once each, using any of the 4 operations. The first to make their target number wins! One possible answer for each of the target challenges is printed on the solution cards.
