A grade 9 response to the AQA May 2017 power and conflict question in which Bayonet Charge was the named poem. This response was completed in 45 minutes so replicates the amount of writing expected within the time frame of the examination. In other grade 9 power and conflict responses on Tes I wrote comparative-style paragraphs. For this essay I used a different method. In the first half of the essay I focused solely on the named poem Bayonet Charge and then referred back to Bayonet Charge in the second half of the response when analysing Remains. Both methods are effective. A grade 9 critical and exploratory response to an exam-style generic question about how Romeo and Juliet’s relationship develops during the play. Also contains a response adapted for a question on Romeo’s feelings for Juliet. I have included the extract and a brief examiner commentary to help explain why the response would achieve grade 9. The response is 662 words along which is about the average length of a grade 9 essay in 45 minutes of exam conditions. This was written in one 45 minute sitting to reflect the amount of time students would have to write their response in the exam.

This lesson is aimed at getting students to extend their analysis of quotations by thinking of 3 inferences for 12 important Scrooge quotations. Students have a go at thinking of 3 inferences for each of the 12 quotations. Later in the lesson, use the animated PowerPoint to share possible answers for each quotation.

A lesson aimed at getting students to be more conscious of the sentences types they use in their descriptive writing. Images from A Christmas Carol are used as the stimulus for the descriptive writing. After each task, students complete extension tasks to review their combination of sentence types.

Simple but effective lesson. Students practise using a combination of simple, compound and complex sentences within descriptive paragraphs using the power and conflict poems as inspiration for their writing. Students then review their paragraph by exploring the impact of each sentence type. To develop their paragraph further, students can add a wider variety of punctuation by responding to the 3 prompts.

Resource aimed at getting students to think more consciously about how they combine simple, compound and complex sentences within their sentences. Students respond to each image by following the suggested order of simple, compound and complex sentences. They can then review each paragraph to think about the function of each sentence type within the paragraph.

A free resource to use with low ability students. Students are provided with 5 grade 3 level paragraphs on the poem Remains. Students must extend the paragraphs by developing better inferences, zooming in to words/techniques or by zooming out to bigger ideas such as PTSD.
