This was great for teaching students how to compare two poems from the Power and Conflict section of the anthology. Students follow the detailed writing frame to complete the comparison using the prompts and structure provided. The writing frame guides students to ensure they meet the criteria for A01, A02 and A03. Also includes all lessons for teaching Poppies and Remains individually to prepare for the comparison with various resources.

A comprehensive A3 revision sheet for ‘A Christmas Carol’ with differentiated tasks. It includes key quotations from each stave and various ways of making links to context for A03. The differentiated tasks encourage students to Bronze: Find language features in the quotations Silver: Match the quotations and context to themes Gold: Work out the 10 quotations which can be adapted to suit the most themes. Also includes a planning resource offering 3 levels of differentiation to help guide students on how to structure a full length response on the following 4 themes/topics: children, materialism, ghosts, Christmas. Tier 1 difficulty (I do): Big idea, topic sentences and quotations are provided. Students add the analysis of the quotations. Tier 2 difficulty (We do): Students must choose 2 quotations to support each topic sentence and analyse the quotations. Tier 3 difficulty (You do): Students have to generate the big idea, the topic sentences, 2 quotations a paragraph and the quotation analysis.

Full lesson which pairs 6 quotations from Stave 1 with 6 quotations and Stave 5 and asks students to make inferences looking for similarities and differences to highlight Scrooge’s transformation and redemption. Starter: List words associated with rain. Learning outcomes: To identify features of Dickens’ style To apply knowledge in a piece of descriptive writing To evaluate against the success criteria Next students examine the methods Dickens uses to describe the fog in an extract from ‘Bleak House’ and the snow in an extract from ‘A Christmas Carol’. There is differentiation so students of different ability can examine different methods used by the author. Students must then try to write a paragraph in the same style about rain. There is a differentiated success criteria. The plenary can be done in the form of peer and self assessment and has sentence stems linked to the success criteria.
