This learning journey contains 10 tasks to prepare students for a descriptive writing task based on an image for AQA Paper 1 Question 5. The 10 tasks gradually increase in difficulty. Linking the completion of a set number of tasks to rewards works as a motivating factor for students.

Ideal as a little and often bell activity/starter - stop the scrolling powerpoint on a quotation and students shout out the missing key word from the quotation. There are over 50 quotations. A ‘because, but, so’ paragraph can act as a useful tool for starting off an exam response on a character to demonstrate the depth of a students’ thinking. Here are 6 ‘because, but, so’ sample paragraphs on the 6 main characters in the novel: Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy, Roger, The Beast. Worksheets aimed at helping students consciously use a range of simple, compound and complex sentences to describe an image. Task 1: Students combine the sentences already provided to describe the image. Task 2: Students must come up with their own examples of simple, compound and complex sentences and then produce their description. This task is very repeatable - just change the image each time. It is worth repeating until students find it easy to come up with simple, compound and complex sentence examples.

Romeo and Juliet into 15 pages to help students with revising the plot and key quotations to the novel. The abridged version includes: - A short summary of each scene. - The key quotation(s) from each scene. - Extended extracts from what I consider to be the key scenes from the play.

I know both of these texts are 21st century but I find these 2 articles are useful for teaching students the Paper 2 Question 4 skills of comparing authorial feelings and perspectives before moving on to looking at a more challenging 19th century comparison text.
