Shadows
There will be no time to lurk in the shadows in this session as groups create fair tests to answer questions before carrying them out and recording the results. Groups then draw conclusions and report their findings to the class.
Suitable for Y6 pupils.
Persuasion/ Argument Weeks 9 - 10
What is censorship? Join the BBFC, become a film examiner and argue your case to classify film clips.
Present reasoned decisions as ‘black cards’ to be shown before the film! Participate in debating a scenario relating to film classification.
Jungle Jars, Bowls and Pots
In this session children take a look at typical examples of pots created by peoples of the Rainforests. They study the differences in pattern and decoration before creating their own pot from clay and decorating it.
Join The Masquerade
Join the masquerade! African masks often form part of a dramatic performance which incorporates dance and music.
Using African music as inspiration children create simple dance steps to show off their masks.
Aeroplanes
Children look at different aeroplanes, make paper aeroplanes and then see which flies the furthest.
Biographies
Discuss biographies and autobiographies and list the features of each showing diffs. Chn write a fact file or biography of one of well-known immigrants or descendants of immigrants identified in S10. Make class books for other children to read in school library.
Ndebele Beadwork
Zooming in on South Africa, children are introduced to the incredible beadwork of the Ndebele people of KwaNdebele.
Through web images children explore the history of this craft and investigate its key visual elements.
Trains
Children look at trains from different ages, then try to make a moving vehicle using magnets, then have a competition involving choosing magnetic metal objects.
Tumble Driers
Children find out how a tumble drier works, list the advantages and disadvantages of tumble driers and then have a debate about whether they are a good or bad thing!
TV Adverts
Children look at kitchen gadgets and early TV adverts and then work in groups to make up an advert for the first microwave, then act it out for the rest of the class.
Soil investigation
Look at images, and discuss the effects and causes of flooding. Do a practical investigation about the permeability of 3 different types of soils including measuring. Review what children have learnt.

Circuit repairs
Time to call out the experts! Children start the session with some drama before turning their attention to some circuits in need of attention!
Children repair broken circuits and identify repairs needed using circuit diagrams.
Suitable for Y6 pupils.
Symbols
In this session symbols say it all! Children discover the conventions that are used in circuit diagrams before using them to create their own. Can they create working circuits from a diagram? Time to find out!

Salsa Feet! Dance To The Music!
Now its time to get up and moving. Children use ICT to learn basic steps before giving them a go to the music themselves. Maybe you can even invite a local expert in to really get things moving.
Keeping cool!
Children continue their investigative work by finding out which material is best for keeping ice cubes cold. What are they going to measure? An understanding of how insulators stop heat from being transferred from or to something is established.

Sources of light
Time to shed some light on what the children already know in this session as they create a concept map and are quizzed on their current understanding! They then identify sources of light and find out why the Moon isn’t one of them!

Myths and Traditional Tales Weeks 5 - 7a
Find brilliant rainforest characters in ‘The Great Kapok Tree. Explore the language of traditional tales and write a rainforest ‘Just So’ story. Read a tale from Papua New Guinea. Make a board game as a lead in to writing a quest story.
Poetic style Weeks 1 - 2
Read and analyse poems from Benjamin Zephaniah’s We are Britain. Discuss the style, language and content of his poems and investigate rhymes. Children write their own poems in the style of BZ’s The British and Body Talk and a fact file about the poet.
Reception Non-fiction (Toys): Labels, captions, list, descriptions (weeks 1-3)
Taking inspiration from I Love You Blue Kangaroo by Emma Chichester-Clark, children share favourite toys and write descriptions. They talk about toys from long ago with a visitor, learn about old bears and make a class toy museum of old and new toys writing factual statements for displays.
Pregnancy
Session 1 - Changes at puberty prepare our bodies to have children of our own. Look in more detail at human fertilisation and pregnancy and learn how important it is for mother-to-be to look after her health. Look at baby growth in utero and explain function of umbilical cord.
Session 2 - Watch a video of a birth and discuss other forms of delivery such as Caesarean or forceps deliveries. Discuss how the parents’ lives will now change and relate this to children’s Flour Babies experience. Research birth rites of passage in different cultures.
