I have always found anonymous reflective surveys to be a crucial personal growth process as a teacher. This simple 13 question survey allows students to reflect on their time in the classroom mainly focusing on safety, leadership, relationships, content mastery, and goals. This adaptable and customizable survey can be used as a progress monitoring tool or an end of year survey. I hope this helps open communication and reflection for you and your students as much as it has for me!

In an effort to make main idea identification more engaging and meaningful, try out this simple ripple effect graphic organizer. Directions are embedded, but students will write the main idea in the center, and then write supporting details (whether it be from a text or not) on each layer surrounding. In an effort to hold all group members accountable for the work they do when working with others, this simple rubric allows for students to asses their peers on their contributions to the group. It is separated into four components which include participation, behavior, on task behaviors, and work. Students will rank each peer on a level 1, 2, or 3. This grade can be used as you please but will offer valuable insight into how each team member carried himself/herself in the groupwork. The rubric is color coded, and user friendly. Take your grades and groupwork to a whole new level. Students always work harder when they know they are going to be held accountable for their actions :)

The lessons in Dr. Seuss's Oh The Places You'll Go story are invaluable and offer a great text example of beginning with the end in mind as we think through our decisions. This fun and engaging lessons pushes students to identify various story elements such as theme, key ideas, textual based answers as well as creative writing based on text to self connections. Students will respond to a supplied prompt relating the story to the students and having them think about where they want to go! This simple and well-organized tracking form allows students to track the moon as it appears to them over a one month period. As explained in the directions, the students will draw a representation of the moon every three days totalling 10 images in 30 days. The students will have to record observation notes including components such as the time they observed it as well as anything else they noticed. They will also have to attempt to identify the moon phase. This student centered project can easily be assigned as a homework for students to realize that the moon phase changes gradually over a month period as well as how the time of day the moon is visible changes as well. Students will be so excited to be able to draw, and take ownership over something that is such a normal part of their world!
