Head Start Maths - Sentence Stems (Place Value)

(0)
Practice key vocabulary using these 100 Sentence Stems. Each card contains : A Sentence Stem with (Number) or (Item) in brackets. An example using the Sentence Stem. A blank Sentence Stem without any (Number) or (Item) in brackets for the student to write their own sentence. Topics Include: Place Value (General) Place Value Above 10 Cardinality and Comparison Roman Numerals Occasionally options are provided for students to use, such as: ___ is more / less than ___. These cards could be laminated and grouped together and used within lessons as a manipulative. Students should be encouraged to say / write each sentence. Ideas for use: Share the cards amongst small groups of students. Students can each write their own sentences based on the examples and vocabulary highlighted in each Sentence Stem. Switch the cards between groups. Hang some examples around the room. Students can go up to a card and write their own answer in their books (this must be a complete sentence). Use other resources such as Head Start Maths - Counting and Cardinality Slideshow to provide a context to the Sentence Stems. Get students to pick a sentence stem at random and get the whole class to write the sentence stem on a mini whiteboard and then hold up their answers. Students can discuss these with each other as a whole class activity. Create a display with each Sentence Stem card. Laminate each card and place some whiteboard pens near the display board for students to fill in values. Students can use these to ask each other questions. Hand each student a card. Students ask each other questions within pairs. Once they have answered each other correctly, switch cards and ask another student in the class. If you have any more ideas on how to use these in lessons, please let me (and others) know by leaving a comment!
