Friendly starter on matching parents to remind students of inherting factors. Using celebrities to engage students, the lesson leads through pheno and genotypes and the differences. Animations of gametes seperating allows the learners to follow the step by step process of how genes are inherted. Worksheets provided (differentiated) to allow students to attempt to calculate probability of children gaining eye colour. Introduces heterozygous and homozygous genes in context. Plenary is exam style question and homework supplied if needed.

Designed to be delivered to year 7 but easily changeable for different year groups or abilities. Activity requires water, a balloon and some blu-tac or similar. Gives the students a chance to explore the different states and get used to different properties. Crossword included to help with vocabulary. Introduces the particle model and its use. Animated slides guide the students through representing each state using the particle model and justifying why. Plenary is exam style questions.

Delivered to KS4 for the 'Atomic structure and Radiation' section of the AQA specification. Recaps the structure of the atom in detail including charges and relative mass. Allows the students to define isotopes and link them to mass numbers. Discusses the formation of ions and how they are formed for atoms to become stable (linking nicely to radiation later in the topic) Worksheets are attached for assessing learning at either point as preferred. Plenary is a visual based class task to determine student understanding of electron gain vs loss.
