Download our popular two-week unit of work for Years 3/4 based on the book ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’, with a focus on instructional texts. Perfect for linking the Stone Age topic in literacy!
This unit gives children the opportunity to understand the features of instructions as a text type. In the first week, children will engage with the text through research, a hands-on toy washing challenge and the opportunity to create their own ‘Woolly Mammoth Cleaning Kit’. They will become familiar with the text type by following instructions to make their own milk bottle mammoth models and identifying features of the text. There is a grammar focus on using prepositions and imperative verbs.
In the second week, pupils will use drama to develop ideas and extend vocabulary. They will then plan their own set of instructions and they will draft, edit and present their final written outcome.
The literacy objectives covered are:

Pupils can use this flowchart to learn about the Dynastic Cycle and the concept of the Mandate of Heaven, a popular philosophy in the time of the Shang Dynasty.
This is an activity that allows pupils to prepare for a class debate. Pupils will place themselves in the shoes of the Shang fighters at the Battle of Muye and they will take part in a debate about whether or not they should defect to the opposing army.
This is a recount of the dramatic end to the Shang Dynasty at the Battle of Muye. Pupils will discover the story of the last Shang king, King Zhou, and they will find out why his behaviour lead to the fall of the Shang Dynasty.
It could be used for guided reading or as a stimulus for pupils to create their own recounts or drama performances.
In this activity pupils will investigate who Lady Fu Hao might have been by imagining some of the artefacts found in her tomb. The activity will help pupils to learn about how people in Shang times were often buried with a tomb full of treasures to take with them to the afterlife.
In these activities pupils will become familiar with the different types of artefacts that help us to know about life in the Shang Dynasty. They will be introduced to the concept of making deductions from evidence and they will fill in a table to show what information different artefacts give us about the Shang period.
This is an activity that encourages pupils to think about the ancient Shang practice of taking prisoners of war. Pupils will consider the arguments for and against Shang kings taking prisoners of war and they will write and deliver a persuasive argument to support or oppose this practice.
This resource contains a set of picture cards to match up with short explanations. Pupils will become familiar with the different types of artefacts that help us to know about life in the Shang Dynasty
This resource will allow pupils to find out how to make their own oracle bones from clay and they will use a symbols key to write their own questions on them using Shang ideograms. The sheet includes a set of instructions for making clay bones and a handy key to Shang symbols.
