Excellent for disengaged pupils or SEN who have real trouble identifying with poetry. This resource compiles two lessons; the first, on urban wild style and the beginnings of hip-hop in NYC in the 1980s, and the second, on Langston Hughes and his ruminations both on Harlem and on civil rights. It attempts to get the students to identify with the feelings behind both types of artists and the motivation for writing poetry/lyrics. Engaging and emotional with pictures of the South Bronx ghetto community from which the Sugar Hill Gang got their inspiration.

Uses Alicia Keys ‘Empire State of Mind’ to analyse a poem based on a place. Concrete images and music help students to ‘see’ what poet sees when describing a place with a poem. Excellent and engaging. Editable power point resource.

Super fun beginning lessons where students need to role play saying hello in Spanish as different characters and celebs. I have used this for Year 6 taster sessions as well as Year 7 first lessons.
