A two lesson sequence focusing on why the Conservatives fell from power in 1964, including a practice 25 mark essay and model answer. The lesson starts with what factors cause a government to lose support, leading into an assessment of the factors involved with the Conservative Party. Students then assess the relative significance of the various factors in causing the Conservative loss in 1964. The lesson then moves to analyse the role of the Profumo Affair in the Conservative fall from government, using a video and a contemporary newspaper to assess the impact of the scandal. Pupils then assess the impact of Douglas-Home on the loss of support, moving to contrast him with Harold Wilson in the Labour Party (video and note sheet included). Students then plan a segment of the following essay: “The Conservatives lost the 1964 election as they were outdated and out of touch with the electorate”. Assess the validity of this view (25 marks). Students use the mark scheme to understand how to achieve Level 3 and above in their answer, moving on to planning a segment using the DEAL frame. Pupils then complete the plan for the essay for homework.

L3 in the 2023 Historic Environment series on Sheffield Manor Lodge. This lesson explores the features, location and development of Sheffield Manor Lodge and why this was a good place to detain Mary, Queen of Scots. This should take a double lesson. The lesson begins with a starter exploring options on what to do with Mary AFTER the failed Northern rebellion. A video then explores Sheffield Manor Lodge focusing on strengths and weaknesses as a defensive base, alongside information about Mary. Students are then introduced to George Talbot and what the benefits/negatives would be of being responsible for Mary. The lesson then moves on to a carousel data capture focusing on the strengths of Sheffield Manor Lodge as a place of detention with a focus on location, features/facilities, George Talbot and limitations. Students then use their A3 table to create an estate agent profile on Sheffield Manor Lodge, finally answering a question explaining why Sheffield Manor Lodge was a good place to detain Mary. Finally, a recap plenary reviews the previous 3 lessons.

Two lesson sequence exploring who thought they deserved the throne and why their claims were valid/invalid. The starter explore how the throne was passed on in Medieval England the positives and negatives of each method. A peer-assess describe question is included. The main task is individual research of one claimant which leads into a snowball/market place the following lesson to share the learning of all the claimants, leading to a judgement on who had the strongest/weakest claim to the throne. An explanation question is included to assess student understanding and corners plenary assesses all students. A homework task (optional) is included which tests who had the stronger claim of Godwinson and William linked to the 12 mark essays for AQA 8145. Plan included.
