English Language - A3 Nonfiction Feature Card Match (on and offline)

(1)
Just a card matcher game/activity - which uses the acronym A DEEP FOREST (with some doubling up of letters for certain features). It was created to go with this language session which covers much more…including sentences and lists. There is also, now, an online version which can be displayed or used on platforms, like Teams, and collaborated on. I’ve been using it with multiple students at a time and I’ve sent it to individual students as homework. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/english-language-language-feature-overview-l1-2-12254117

This contains all the government issued Subject Content Statements for L1 & 2 - Functional Skills English. It shows highlighted/colour-coded, side-by-side comparison/contrast of L1 & L2 and aims to briefly explain some key differences between the two levels in relation to all 3 elements. These feature in my 30 page revision book for L1/2. Hope it’s useful!

English Language - Features Overview, Annotate & Assess (L1 & L2)

This double session is intended for 3 hours but could be extended over a few sessions and contains 40 slides & an 8 page hand out. It is meant to follow my Language Features intro’ session and then features the main acronym running through all my resources. Effectively, students create a language guide to carry forward through the year, or for revision at home. Explore both fictional and nonfictional features of language - Word Classes Sentence Forms & Purposes Listing Repeating Letters Figurative Features Persuasive; Informative & Explanatory Features This is quite detailed and is essentially 2-3 sessions in one. It is littered with task boxes and guided annotations via step-by-step/click-by-click animations. There are two main ways for delivery, either teacher-led or student-led. Teacher-led, requires a prescriptive approach: providing the annotations and answers upfront. This can get quite monotonous but splitting it up will be necessary. Approaching this way, would be an introductory approach. Student-led requires the opposite: holding back the answers and annotations and letting students find them, either independently or together, before providing any answers. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! =-)

Including the Subject Content Statements in colour-coded, comparative format, this 30 page booklet can be distributed and displayed in PDF format and written on with Microsoft Edge. Likewise, it can be printed in A4 in booklet form, which looks really nice and works well going through it with a small group. It can also be taught - lecture-style - with a 49 slide, fully animated, answers Powerpoint. Take your students through the main skills of the FS new spec. With detailed language feature grid, a multitude of tasks and activities, as well as a number of exam-style questions. This can be used in classes, as a guided workshop set or it can be given as independent study. Aimed at both L1 and L2 students, it could also be used with lower GCSE and Adult groups, too. A free Punctuation book is also available from our partner GCSE English Language shop - https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/english-language-punctuation-workbook-and-answer-booklet-12225126 Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

New Functional Skills English - Summary & Comparison - Apprenticeships Reading

(2)
This session has two documents which I’ve created myself - specifically for purpose and generically enough for use with a range of vocational students studying English. The topic: Becoming an Apprentice. Start with a simple pairs task. Practise determining purpose and tone, locate and summarise main points, compare and synthesise ideas… It isn’t incredibly detailed but it does work well for reading and writing practice and it has slides with comparative phrasing - which are also A3 posters for display in the classroom. Differences are there just for reference as similarities is where the focus lies. It also shows what level of effort I put into my resources. Please take a look at my shop - more resources are in which are now fully planned with session briefs and 50% off full year packs! A free Punctuation book is also available from our partner GCSE English Language shop - https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/english-language-punctuation-workbook-and-answer-booklet-12225126 Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! This is quite popular but the reviews are limited! Thanks to those who have, already. It is much appreciated. =-)

New Functional Skills English - Detailed Reading & Writing

This uses a cinema booking page and a TV show review. The former being aimed at L1 and the latter, L2. It guides through determining purpose & tone, via the use of sentence types and purposes - as well as revisiting persuasive features, previously explained. There are a multitude of animations which demonstrate and explain how Document 1’s purpose can be determined. After guidance, all students are encouraged to have a go at Document 2. L1 students may need support with that one and there are slides with quotations selected to get them started. Finish off with an email creati a set of relayed instructions to a friend, from Document 1 - after a bit of vocabulary replacement research.

This differentiated lesson is designed to last 3 hours and is modeled on the new C&G exams for both L1 & L2. It is a professionally animated ppt presentation with animated annotations and step-by-step, click-by-click animation throughout. It has a number of handouts, to complete tasks but can also be used without a couple of them, as I’d just get them to draw tables into their books. Learning outcomes have been differentiated, as well as most tasks. It also includes two sets of 12 reading questions for both L1 & L2. The questions for each level are very different in the new specification and so this differentiation took some work! I created it to dollow on from a previous Space-themed reading & writing session which is also in my shop. Take a look! https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-functional-skills-english-l1-2-reading-and-article-writing-space-12214592 Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Break up the monotony of formal writing with some solid examples of informal approaches. This session has links to a multitude of upcoming movie trailers - simply click on each mini image, on the slide, in turn, and close each screen once they have finished. There are a number to choose from so that you can extend the session in a number of ways. I have mixed classes so I chose trailers for a number of different audiences. the hand out was designed by a colleague of mine and has 3 boxes which can be copied and pasted onto a second page in word, should you wish you use the lot of them. - A second session is also included for free, which logically follows on to review writing. Hope it is helpful! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. =-)

This lovely looking ppt and handout set is best used with a bolt load of free brochures from The Brochure Bank online. Order as many as you need and they are delivered within 48 hours - free! Practise writing skills, using language features, taking notes from videos and writing persuasive and informative postcards. This leads nicely into Report writing - simply get my session or create one to follow removing the persuasive elements. This lesson is also good because some of the new C&G writing questions are mixing purposes.

Takes the whole group to the same educational end via tasks which are progressive through two 1hr sessions (or so). It looks at ‘explicit’ and ‘implicit’ definitions and examples. It uses a how to stay safe at a concert video to start with and has questions on the handout. There are a couple of basic reading tasks and a group activity with a map link and matching 10 questions. Looks briefly at 6 non-fictional layouts and has a pairs, matching, game with instructions for peer questioning. There is a template and suggestions for a mock article and an example basic article with an annotations task. There is a mini homework task at the end. Join the discussion! This heavily discounted, deluxe resource pack will only be 53% off for a limited time. It is packed and includes 10+ individual sessions and a 30 page Revision Workbook covering various aspects of both Reading and Writing; relating to the new spec for C&G but can be used widely. Because they’re created for resit students, they are quite dense and whereas I create them for 1.5 and 3hr sessions…one session may last a week. I’ve also included a fully resourced, intensive 6 week crash course set! Another hefty booklet and matching animated ppt. As well as a 20+ page On/Offline Homework book which covers all the major topics. Covers both Reading and Writing: Discern Titles Read for Purpose and Mood/Tone Identify Interpret Summarise & Compare (Free - see link) Fiction and Nonfiction Features Language and Format Matching Features to Purpose and Audience Planning/Writing - Formal/Informal Letters and Emails Speeches Formal/Informal Reports Blogs Articles Instructions This constitutes a year’s worth of resources, and more, with a mixture of themes and varied documents. With a basic scheme of work, a 30 page revision book which can used as homework or assessment and a full set of assessment tasks in the 6 week crash course book and ppt. There is also, now a 30 page assessment book which I created for my newer set. For a free preview and the Scheme of Work, please download these: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-functional-skills-english-summary-and-comparison-apprenticeships-12245602 https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-functional-skills-english-article-writing-interactive-session-12483185 Some clearly differentiated, others can be but you have to do that on-the-spot - as in, getting students of differing ability to complete a plan and/or opening, rather than a whole piece of writing (for example). See individual resources for more details! =-)

English - Spellings & Homophones Practice Sheet - Christmas

This is a good starter or extension task but it is only visually Christmassy. Starts off quite basic and works towards more complex words and I did get mistletoe in there. Would work well on the back of my punctuation practice sheet - with answer sheets both can be peer marked and this one even has a box for a peer marker to initial. Any feedback would be appreciated! Hope you find it useful…

This little set is completely animated with step-by-step/click-by-click animation - including a Formal Letter Structure guide and an overview of punctuation which has been differentiated through E3, L1 & L2. There is an example formal/informal letter which is also a formal language assessment task in which student must cross out informal choices of language. Additionally, there is a summative writing task and templates for writing either a formal email or letter. Finally, a reflection slide for proofreading and correct errors… As usual, any feedback would be greatly appreciated and please offer any improvements or criticisms. Always willing to improve! =-)

This starts off easy and with a little bit of guidance - then advances through stages to increase the level and could be used for either Functional Skills or GCSE English. Stage 1 needs a couple of commas but I did this in hope students would work it out. mine have been doing great with it. There are 6 image files with answers. Stage 6 can have varied responses, so there is no number. Some sentences could be ended or continued with a semi-colon, for example Hope you find it useful - any issues, leave some feedback and I will update.
