It’s useful for advanced beginner French students to provide a language learning map and for intermediate French students who are working with more complex language and texts, including authentic resources, and as a French vocabulary audit and enrichment.
The verbs are all in the infinitive form and feature high-frequency French ER verbs that I work with in the advanced beginner to intermediate stages of my French learning programmes. It’s important in language learning to ensure that students quickly develop a useful French verbs vocabulary bank, are able to recognize high-frequency French verbs, and are confident with the meaning of those verbs in their first or home language. At that point students can move swiftly on to looking at French conjugation and using the verbs in a communicative and practical context, enabling them to produce more detailed and descriptive language. This is an integral element to successful language learning.
Students shouldn’t take on the task of learning long lists of verbs or other vocabulary all at once though: frequent and regular use in real-world practical contexts is far more successful at embedding vocabulary into longer-term memory. I also use the books for quick vocabulary quizzes, again at frequent and regular intervals - I simply shout out the French or English verb, the first student or team to shout out the correct answer wins a point. I’ve found this to be a really successful alternative to more formal vocabulary testing.

Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, regardless of level, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce accurately language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning.

I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning, which is equally important for all learners.

French Numbers 0-31 Challenge Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of French numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping beginner French students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words in French. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on French Numbers 0-31, but also for sub lessons, as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in French, but also to enjoy working with French, and to feel confident about doing so.
All questions are in French, and range in complexity and challenge, both in terms of language and number skills. I’ve used visual prompts such as maths symbols to ensure all learners can engage with the questions, and this helps them to begin to infer meaning from context, and to decode cues and prompts to foster understanding. I don’t allow the use of calculators to increase the challenge a little. Some questions focus specifically on French maths language, which students do not always engage with very often. The level of maths is fairly simple, but certainly draws on prior number and arithmetic learning.

I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going.
Frequent and regular engagement with the activity brings the best results: with the planning sheet, students can create and prepare increasingly detailed and more complex responses, reflecting their learning progress. I definitely find it useful to read through the questions together as a whole-group, with students offering initial suggested responses. This ensures everyone can actually access the language, and they also benefit a lot from each others’ ideas.

French verbs dominoes games: 3 games and challenges are a lively alternative to more traditional grammar & vocabulary ‘drilling’ activities. They will help students build up and embed their vocabulary and knowledge of common French verbs in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher.
There are 99 high-frequency French verbs in the infinitive form, along with the corresponding English verbs. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino bilingual verb sequence, on the classroom floor, or on a long(ish) table, by matching the French and English verbs. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading, and also helps students identify cognates and words that may look similar to English, but mean something different.
There are three games, each with a different level of challenge:
Challenge One features the verbs in alphabetical order, French to English
Challenge Two features the verbs in random order, also French to English
Challenge Three again features the verbs in random order, but this time from English to French, which works a little different in terms of vocab recall
There’s a full alphabetical French-English verb list, which students find really useful as they begin to build and embed their verb vocabulary - we find it useful to have a quick look through the list prior to playing for the first time, and it’s also really good for some additional whole-group pronunciation practice. Each challenge is on a different background, so that they can be easily identified.
To ensure successful learning, play regularly as you work with verbs and vocabulary - against a timer in teams works well to map both improved recall and word recognition, as well as increasing confidence - students genuinely enjoy seeing if they can beat their own time record.
There’s definitely prep involved - printing and cutting out. I always laminate my dominoes games, as they’re far more learner-friendly, and they last for absolutely years, so once you’re prepped the set or several sets, you will never have to prep the games again.

A whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, ideal for practising, reinforcing and consolidating 99 high-frequency Italian verbs. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. Active learning is a really successful way of developing both language skills and general confidence.
The verbs are in the infinitive form, and the aim of the game is to create an Italian verb chain as quickly as possible. There are two games, each with a slightly different challenge:
Challenge 1: verbs are in alphabetical order, with the question and answer format: Io ho… Chi ha… ?
Challenge 2: verbs are in random order, with the question and answer format: Hai… Sì, ho…
In both challenges, the English translation of the verb appears immediately below the Italian verbs, which maximizes opportunity for really embedding vocab. The game works just as well if the cards are placed on a longish table, or other flat surface. I created the game for my KS3 Italian learners, who are ready to move into KS4 Italian, but I’ve also played the game with my more advanced learners, who really enjoy ’going back to the start’ and having the opportunity to get up, walk about and talk - the games definitely provide some essential variety in learning activities.
I’d definitely recommend you laminate the cards, despite the extra prep and expense. They’re far more learner-friendly, and they will last for absolutely years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. I always do some high-speed verb quiz oral warm-up and warm-down activities to really get the most out of the game, for example ***Come si dice APRIRE in inglese? or Vero o falso - TO OPEN è APRIRE in italiano?***.
There is an alphabetical Italian-English verb list, featuring all the verbs used in the game. This is useful as a longer-term reference resource too.

I like to have sets of super simple worksheets that I can give to my young beginner learners of English, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. I give my students these worksheets at the same time as introducing the time set, so that they can practise and embed both recognising the time, and writing the time phrase itself. Students really enjoy the opportunity to test their recall too.
The worksheets are useful in a number of contexts: I use them for sub lessons, as starters, plenaries, five-minute refreshers and home learning activities. I occasionally use them for more formal assessment purposes too.

KS3 GERMAN KS4 GERMAN GCSE GERMAN SEPARABLE VERBS PRESENT TENSE 12 CHALLENGE CARDS FREEBIE focusing on conjugating German separable verbs in the present tense.
They are perfect for upper KS3 German students, who are working regularly with compound sentences and more complex texts, KS4 German students preparing for German GCSE, and KS5 German students, who are refreshing prior knowledge.
German separable verbs can be quite a challenging concept for English-speaking German learners, and I’ve found that focused practice really helps them consolidate their understanding of how to conjugate them accurately, particularly the location of the separable prefix at the end of the clause.

These German Europe flashcards / posters are always really popular with my students and great for the beginning of a new school year to decorate your learning environment with specific learning goals. They’re really useful for creating and instant and comprehensive introduction to Europe in German. There are 144 portrait posters (A4, 8.5 x 11) in German showing European countries, capital cities and flags. They give your classroom a great multicultural look and feel, at the same time promoting German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of your - and your students’ - classroom. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the posters can help students develop their general knowledge and understanding of European geography.
I’ve included a range of islands, such as the Faroe Islands, to extend students’ knowledge of Europe a little further, and I’ve also shown some countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. I’ve also included two posters for some countries, such as France, officially known as Französische Republik - you can choose either that, or the more frequently-used Frankreich to display.
The posters look great displayed horizontally across a particular learning area - alphabetically works well, though non-alphabetically is perfect for a country quest activity. They’re ideal for the annual Europe Day celebration, and the European Day of Languages, as well as an all year round display. It’s definitely extra prep and expense, but I do always laminate my classroom display posters / flashcards - they hang on the walls more easily, and I recycle them to display at different times of the school year. There are two backgrounds to choose from - World Map or plain, so 144 posters in total.

I encourage my beginner Spanish students to build up a comprehensive vocabulary bank that they can reference easily whenever they need it. I also use this kind of vocabulary list for quick vocabulary quizzes, spelling competitions and so on. I’ve put the numbers across two pages, because the size of the font is really important for all learners, but especially for beginner language learners, as they begin to familiarize themselves with***words and spelling systems*** in a new language. I have also uploaded a number reference sheet I give my more experienced Spanish learners - it’s in landscape format, with all the numbers on a single sheet, so the font size is smaller - students who’ve been learning Spanish for a while are comfortable with quite a lot of text on a single page. 99 high-frequency Spanish verbs with 99 matching English verbs cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment, ideal for advanced beginner Spanish learners, as they prepare to move into and work confidently at intermediate Spanish level. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional 'vocabulary drilling' exercises.
Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their core Spanish verbs vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write activities have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the verbs don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this is a great way of encouraging your students to engage with new language, and to build their vocabulary at the same time. This prepares them really well for creative activities in Spanish - they will have a rich vocabulary to choose from.
Students can work independently of the teacher, challenging themselves and each other in their best Spanish accent to find all the matching verbs cards in Spanish and English. The card templates allow students to apply their French knowledge practically and creatively, as they put together mini-quiz cards for each other, preferably from memory.
The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Spanish-English reference list of all 99 verbs. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in Spanish. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in Spanish. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook. There are three differentiated written recall challenges in the workbook.

Les couleurs en français - 8 posters / flashcards. These adjectival agreement flashcards / posters, with a focus on the colour vert, make an ideal grammar and speaking prompt in the French classroom - I encourage students to look carefully at the differences between le monstre vert and la voiture verte in the singular, and les montres verts and les voitures vertes in the plural.
I use questions such as Vrai ou faux ? Le monstre verte ? , really emphasizing, even exaggerating pronunciation, so that they can hear the difference in agreement. I often write the questions on the whiteboard, as it’s equally important that they are able to recognize the differences in the written words too, and to link sound with spelling - all of this means I really make the most from my classroom learning display.
There are two design formats to choose from - either the French flag, or plain without frame, to keep prep costs to a minimum. Print on card stock and / or laminate if you can, as they are easier to manipulate as flashcards, display much more effectively as decor, and remain in excellent condition for years.

French Telling the Time Dominoes Set 1 features analogue clocks times o’clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past the hour in French, with 3 games and 3 challenges. The games really help students develop their skill in telling the time in French in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, learning completely independently.
Dominoes games are ideal for language learning, with a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading. They are perfect for pair and small-group work too. Students work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino time-sequence line, on the classroom floor or on a long(ish) table, by matching the times and the clock faces.
This kind of activity is really versatile, and useful not only during the introduction phase of learning these particular clock times, but at many times across the school year - for cover lessons, as starters, warm-ups, plenaries, practice & refresh, and also free-choice activity time - it’s a great idea to have a range of folders ready for students to select particular content according to what area they feel they’d like to work on.
