GCSE GERMAN A LEVEL GERMAN ADJECTIVES 34-page written recall workbook featuring 400 German adjectives, English-German, with two written recall challenges. My students find it really useful as a year-round written recall workbook, and particularly as we approach exam time - they generally like to work at their own pace, either in class time or at home. The level is roughly intermediate German preparing to move into advanced German. It's useful for advanced beginner German students to provide a language road map with learning goals, outlining the adjectives they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS4 Italian students who are moving on to more complex texts tenses in Italian, and for KS5 Italian A Level Italian students as revision. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. There are 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. The questions in this set are a straightforward introduction to, and practice of, various analogue clock times in Spanish, and also to working and learning with challenge cards. I generally work with telling the time in Spanish quite quickly with my beginner Spanish students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example. There are two questions: ¿Qué hora es? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. I’ve only used the plural form of the question in these cards. The second question is Verdadero o falso? and students write either verdadero or falso- where the answer is falso remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. It’s also a really popular activity too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other. Telling the time is key beginner Spanish vocabulary, which is really useful to know as soon as possible, and students are able to familiarise themselves with how Spanish words ‘look’, and also how sounds are represented in the written form. I use these kinds of flashcards / posters to gradually introduce and work on the specific target language vocabulary we’re working on, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward ¿Qué hora es? to ¿Sí/ no? or ¿Verdadero o falso? questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as negative sentences No, no es medianoche, es mediodía and so on, paying particular attention here to the masculine and feminine. These are really simple ways to really try to get the most from classroom learning dsiplay, using them as visual language prompts, as well as keeping the target vocabulary fresh in students’ minds, and as language refresh and revision by changing the display at certain points of the school year. I like to have sets of learning displays for students, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating.
