GCSE GERMAN A LEVEL GERMAN ADJECTIVES 34-page written recall workbook featuring 400 German adjectives, English-German, with two written recall challenges. My students find it really useful as a year-round written recall workbook, and particularly as we approach exam time - they generally like to work at their own pace, either in class time or at home. The level is roughly intermediate German preparing to move into advanced German. It's useful for advanced beginner German students to provide a language road map with learning goals, outlining the adjectives they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning. It's also useful for intermediate German students who are working with more complex language and texts, including authentic resources, and advanced German students as a vocabulary audit and enrichment. For UK teachers, the level is roughly GCSE / Standard / age 16 examinations moving into advanced level, all examination boards (AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, SQA). There are two written recall challenges in the workbook: Written Recall Challenge One all four hundred adjectives in alphabetical order: students are prompted for the German translation of an English adjective Written Recall Challenge Two this challenge also requires students to write the German translation from an English prompt, but the adjectives are in random, rather than alphabetical order, which also helps develop competence in spelling in German. I love to give my learning environment a really French Christmas feel - even my older students appreciate it. With my younger learners, it’s not about learning all the French Christmas vocabulary (30 is too many for young beginners), it’s about giving them daily opportunities to engage with the French language through guessing and spelling games, pronunciation practices and so on. I’ve included a selection of both generic Christmas words, such as bauble and Christmas tree, as well as more Francophone-specific words, such as Père Fouettard and la galette des Rois. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. There are two backgrounds to choose from: blue winter or snow, so 60 posters / flashcards in total. They are in portrait A4 (8.5x11) format. I definitely recommend that you print on card stock and/or laminate for longevity - you’ll be able to display your French Christmas posters and use them as flashcards to introduce French Christmas words, as well as discuss similarities and differences in Christmas customs, for years to come! GCSE ITALIAN KS4 ITALIAN A LEVEL ITALIAN CONDITIONAL TENSE 25 ITALIAN -ARE VERBS My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS4 Italian students who are moving on to more complex texts tenses in Italian, and for KS5 Italian A Level Italian students as revision. The workbook focuses on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. I see this a lot with the future tense too, and tend to introduce both tenses quite closely together. It’s also easy to confuse the future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well. The resource is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Italian-English and English-Italian. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Italian across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. ADVANCED ITALIAN INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN CONJUGATION PRACTICE PLUPERFECT TENSE The workbook focuses on 25 high-frequency regular and irregular verbs Italian ARE verbs in the pluperfect tense (trapassato prossimo). There are three differentiated ‘quick conjugation’ challenges, each with 50 conjugation questions, so 150 conjugations in total. My students really enjoy learning and practicing their conjugation skills with these kinds of workbooks, and I’ve created a series of them that they can access whenever they feel they need to do a little extra work on their conjugation. The games are ideal for developing listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling skills in French, as well as learning key beginner French vocabulary. All the grids are designed for all the squares to be crossed off in order to win the game, and depending on the size of your class, there can be several winners per game. The grids with pictures are in both color and BW: color looks great, and I laminate these for class, using them with wipe-clean pens so that they can be recycled for years. These 60 challenge cards are perfect for developing Spanish language skills in general, as well as for practising and revising how to tell the time in Spanish. There are 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. The questions in this set are a straightforward introduction to, and practice of, various analogue clock times in Spanish, and also to working and learning with challenge cards. I generally work with telling the time in Spanish quite quickly with my beginner Spanish students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example. There are two questions: ¿Qué hora es? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. I’ve only used the plural form of the question in these cards. The second question is Verdadero o falso? and students write either verdadero or falso- where the answer is falso remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. It’s also a really popular activity too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other. Please read the Terms of Use. Create a fabulous Spanish look and feel in the learning environment, promoting Spanish as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of the classroom. Telling the time is key beginner Spanish vocabulary, which is really useful to know as soon as possible, and students are able to familiarise themselves with how Spanish words ‘look’, and also how sounds are represented in the written form. I use these kinds of flashcards / posters to gradually introduce and work on the specific target language vocabulary we’re working on, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward ¿Qué hora es? to ¿Sí/ no? or ¿Verdadero o falso? questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as negative sentences No, no es medianoche, es mediodía and so on, paying particular attention here to the masculine and feminine. These are really simple ways to really try to get the most from classroom learning dsiplay, using them as visual language prompts, as well as keeping the target vocabulary fresh in students’ minds, and as language refresh and revision by changing the display at certain points of the school year. I like to have sets of learning displays for students, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Spanish flag or plain, so 56 flashcards / posters in total. I like to introduce telling the time as soon as possible in my German learning programmes, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, talking about daily routines for example. The word wall is useful not only during the introductory phase, but also during the practice and consolidation phase, ensuring that key language is always visible and accessible to learners. It’s important not to move ahead with time phrases too quickly, and I make sure that students are fully confident with a time set before introducing a new one. We talk a lot about the similarities and differences in how we tell the time in the different languages too, and I’ve found that very young learners actually develop their confidence in telling time in their first language. I do vary my word wall displays on a regular basis, as they’re great as revision tools too, and this also prevents learning displays becoming ‘invisible’ to students. There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format, which facilitates a sufficiently large font size that can be seen from various locations in the classroom. There are two headers in the set: Die Uhrzeit and Wie viel Uhr ist es? Creating new headers, such as Wie spät ist es? is a really popular activity too.
